Help with this GCSE Maths question please?

Here is the question:

Work out an estimate for the value of
(0.49 x 0.61)^2

It's a non-calculator question and I'd be grateful if someone could explain it to me, thanks.

so 0.49 goes to( 0.50 *0.60 ) which is 0.3 and square it :smile:

let me know if its the right answer in ur answer scheme

you do 0.5 x 0.6 as the rule of BIDMAS says brackets are first
then you do that in your method of multiplicaction
then once you have found the answer square it by using a method of multiplication

When ever is says estimate you round everything to 1SF

If there's a 0 on its own before the decimal- i.e. in 0.543154- then you don't treat it as a significant figure.

If it's between other numbers- i.e. 1042.3153- then it is treated as a significant figure.

Basically, 0.x to 1sf = 0.[x rounded].

Write 'root 8' in a different way, so that you end with something that looks like '8 to the power of (something)', which will be x.

root 8 is the same as writing 8 to the power of 1/2, or a half.

So, x = 1/2
