Can you still get a good job even if you don't go to a Russel group???

E.g if you did an English Lit degree at Nottingham Trent or bath spa, and you lived in London, can you get a job?? Such as account managing etc
Yes.
My dad went to Essex uni and makes a bucketload. You can go to Oxford but if you get bad grades it won't matter!

No
Yes, but do start using careers so you cna figure out what you wnat to do. Do get a good grade.
What is a 'good job' and who decides what a 'good job' is?
I know lots of people with good jobs who didn't go to Russell Group universities. Just don't go to one of the really bad ones like Wolverhampton or London Met and make sure you get a 2:1 at least.

People with English Lit degrees aren't exactly sought after if they're not going into teaching and don't have a masters degree. Hmmm...if you don't want to go into postgraduate study, you could always apply for a graduate scheme which anyone with a degree can get onto. They only accept 2:1 and above though.

This is actually the most reassuring thing I've heard on the student room so far. I'm off to uni of Essex next year!

That aside, Russell group universities are only really Russell group because:

A) They are self declared Russell group
B) They specialise in research

So unless you want to go into academic research, they are nothing better than a redbrick university that, say, is 20 places further down the league.

A university degree isn't the only thing that employers will looks at, so yes, you can still get a good job even if you didn't get into a Russell Group University.

But surely this is the same with all of the humanities such as Geography, history etc, if you're not a good at science; it seems to me that a lot of people assume that they're going to go into teaching? Which is so not true, I know people with English degrees who work for big companies in London who are getting a decent salary- and they're not teachers. Another thing that annoys me, is that generally people assume that if you do a science you're smarter? I disagree with that too, believe it or not, it's actually a skill to write fluently and concisely, and to actually read a book and interpret numerous amounts of meanings in the text. Of course it's also an equally great skill to be able to be great at equations and science stuff, etc, I just can't stand when people assume science is more respected, because it isn't. It's equally respected in my opinion. Surely not all biology or chemistry graduates are going to be sought after? A biology degree isn't going to help a magazine editor or even a general manager? All degrees have their purposes, and I believe as long as you have a 2:1or above- you can pretty much go into any field ( apart from medicine and law)

I do agree that people who study a science are not necessarily more intelligent but the fact of the matter is that they will have far more jobs available in their field. And of course you can get a decent, well paying job if you get a 1st or a 2:1 in a humanities subject (I did mention the graduate schemes) but why study History or English Lit if you have no intention of applying what you learned at uni in your future career?

I got a graduate job with one of the Big Four which paid a higher than normal salary with only a Law degree, no masters or specific training. I gave it up after a year to go into postgraduate studies because I want to be a lawyer; working in the financial services industry wasn't satisfactory. I can guarantee that graduates from most degree disciplines can make a career in that industry if they really want to and eventually make a ton of money though.
