Best Business Degree?

Wanting to go to Uni soon and study some type of Business as it is something I am very interested in. But there are so many different types of Business degree and I don't know what is the most useful type of degree.
I am interested in going into Investment Banking, but I'm not sure if a Business Degree can get you into this field of work, so any help on how to get into this field of work would be helpful.
Also any other advice on what Business Degree is most helpful and what type of jobs come with specific degrees would be helpful, thank you.

Do you know if Business Degree's are valuable? After looking a bit more into it, it seems like employers don't value a business degree, but this could be wrong of course.

Do you reckon you could get in with a BTec in business?
You can get onto a Business degree with a BTEC in Business. Most Universities do accept it, do check out Universities for more information.
If you know what University you want to get into then I can help you find the entry requirements if you want.

I study Business Management at Newman University and just finished my first year. We have done modules from marketing, accounting and finance, operations management, leadership skills and more. Doing the different topics allowed me to narrow my choice to taking a marketing route.
I have many students in my class who have never done business before and are doing fine and enjoying the subject.
We had a work placement module and the careers service of our uni were also involved in making us aware or job opportunities and statistics. We had one session which looked back on what students do after leaving and found out that people with business degrees got into work quicker.
Its all about using whatever research has been done to help narrow down your choices. What other uni's are you interested in? I had no idea what I wanted to with my business degree before I came here but with help I know where I want to go and What I want to do.
The way I see it, Business is involved in everything from schools, to theatres to creating things, there's always some business element that you can be involved in with your degree.
Hope that helps!

Do you have any specifics in mind? I started that way but after open days and talking to people I ended up changing my mind. Although Newman is a brilliant uni and I am really enjoying it here.

I want to go to somewhere such as Kings or Queen Mary or SOAS, I understand these aren't right at the top, but they're pretty good. I really want to move to somewhere like London for Uni though.
Is a Business Degree respectable? I hear a lot of people ridicule it and say that employers don't really care for it :frown:

Business is no better or worse than any theoretical degree (non vocational)- what matters more to employers is the full package the indivual offers- work experience they have, soft skills like communication and teamwork and how good an application you put together

Respectable depends on what you mean by the term; other students will often ridicule your degree but is that enough reason not to do what you enjoy? Employers will largely have a neutral view of your degree, any graduate scheme you apply to will be open to students of all other disciplines so what's more important (as the poster above said) is your work experience, extracurricular activities, grade (2:1+) and how well you interview. Given that you expressed an interest in investment banking, Kings College London is probably the best out of the universities you've outlined; banks tend to have universities that they prefer when it comes to recruiting graduates, the main ones are Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial, UCL and Warwick with some of the slightly less targeted universities being Durham, Nottingham, Bristol, Bath, KCL, Edinburgh, St Andrews and Manchester (+a few others). Out of those the only 'targets' to offer undergraduate business degrees are UCL and Warwick, with virtually all of the slightly less targeted ones offering business with the best ones (in my opinion) being Bath, Manchester and Nottingham. Hope that helps!

A university being at the top doesn't meant others aren't good. I chose Newman University because I needed to fill that last place on UCAS. But when I came to open days and compared them I found that Newman was a lot nicer, approachable and even informative. I actually had a one to one session with the head of the department I was going to study in and discussed many things which helped me finalise it. People said I should have gone UOB but I'm a lot happier with the support in place from all over the uni. My Friend went to UOB and she ended up dropping out because all she found they just cared what grade she got and not her.
Business is a respectable degree. Business is involved in everything nowadays and thats how I look it. It can be harder if you specialise in something then it becomes niche. A lot of employers these days want you to have a degree rather than a specific one.
Have you researched any unis in London yet?
Is thistrolling or what? 'Is a business degree valuable?' 'I hear people ridicule it''Employers don't value a business degree'... Surely this can't be serious? Orcomes from someone who's done little to no research. Nevertheless, I'll respondfor anyone reading who may have some concerns.

1 -Employers for the most part don't really care what your degree isbelieve it or not. Shock horror. Hence why the majority of Graduate Schemes areopen to students from Drama and Performing Arts to Computer Science and CivilEngineering (and everything else in between). As for Business/Managementspecifically, depending on job, it'll absolutely valued by your employer - I'dsay this is only the case if you're carrying a decent University/BusinessSchool name though (my opinion, not fact - based on what some business coursesare like!).

2 - To sum up; is it a valuable degree? Yes it is. You'll learn the key concepts andmodels of business: operations, supply chain & logistics, accountancy andfinance/investment appraisal and the like, project management, organizationalbehaviour, strategy etc. - and of course your marketing and HR should that bethe route you choose to pursue. A business degree is a far cry from what a lotof people think it is, but I'd say it's more about shaping the way you thinkand approach things - which are arguably subjective.

3 - Who ridicules a business degree? It's a good degree to have. Above every computerscientist is a manager - and one who may not necessarily know how to do thecomputer scientists job (using CS as an example)... If you want a solidgrounding in business and are passionate about it, go for the degree. If youcare more about what these imaginary peers say; go for economics or accountancyand do a master’s in Business when you're finished. Just bear in mind thateconomics (unless from a target uni) will get you almost nowhere business wont, and accountancy will leave you with very limited options in the short term.Although most senior execs typically come from a finance background - you'd beas well skipping Uni for this though, just go and get a job with a companywho'll sponsor your exams, save yourself the debt.

Hey, I am a bit late to the party but wanted to add in my 2 cents:

- I am interested in going into Investment Banking, but I'm not sure if a Business Degree can get you into this field of work.
A degree in Business CAN get you into the field of investment banking because of the topics covered from year 2 onwards. I say from year 2 because that is when you get the option to specialise in a field, which in your case would be the financial route covering finance and management accountancy. You will also stand out compared to student studying just finance as you will have knowledge of other areas of business rather than just being limited to Finance.

- any other advice on what Business Degree is most helpful and what type of jobs come with specific degrees.
This completely depends on what you want to do long term career wise.
> Marketing - Very fun career route to go down but there is a shed load of competition in this field as literally everyone wants to get into marketing and PR. Even people without degrees.
> HR - Also a fun and interesting route to go down which is more specialised than Marketing and also opens up a lot of doors to working abroad. Competition in the market is fierce still but not as fierce as Marketing.
> Accounting and Finance - Great for getting a career in various finance fields and a lot more specialised than the other routes. Jobs are plenty and the career is pretty much recession proof! Also opens doors to working abroad and for major companies. One of my friends done BSc in Business and Finance and got a job with PWC within a few months of graduating.
> Information Systems - If you love IT and love Business like I do, this route is perfect as you get to mix two - Business Management with Programming. I want to get into Data/Business Analysis hence why I have gone down this route. There are plenty of jobs out there and if you decide later down the route you much prefer the IT route you can easily cross over into becoming a Programmer. A good few of my friends have done that.
> Generalist - Great if you're open to going wherever the wind (and your job search) takes you. You'll know a bit about everything but won't be seen as a 'specialist' which has its pros and cons.

Business degrees are one of the most valued degrees as you get to understand just about all aspects of a business and how they work rather than just knowing about a certain part only.
