New rules make it harder to challenge exam results

More 'toughening up' of exams, it seems...

Students sitting GCSEs, AS-levels and A-levels this summer could find it harder to successfully appeal against results following changes to the rules governing exam remarks and appeals.

The exam regulator Ofqual said too many students had been getting extra marks, and possibly a higher grade as a result, after requesting an exam remark when the original mark was “perfectly appropriate”.

From this summer, however, examiners are being told to only change a mark if there is a clear marking error rather than simply a difference of interpretation, which is likely to result in substantially fewer successful challenges.

If the grade goes up, that indicates that a different marker believe that the work deserves a different grade. Since not all the papers are marked by the same person, I think it's not fair if one marker suggests one grade, and a different one suggests another. It suggests the marking process is flawed.

It's possible that someone who produced a lower quality piece of work got a higher grade than you.

I am beginning to hate IAL.......why did i ever opt this???
The best way to avoid this is for markers to mark properly the first time round - that is, have several senior examiners or at least specialist teachers marking, without rushing and paying due attention to the work they are considering...I find it abhorrent that it costs so much to sit exam papers yet they are marked in such a rush

btw, sorry for the capitals guys
How can it be bad if more of us get better grades? That doesn't make any sense, it just seems like they are doing it to make our lives harder.
If the mark goes up does that not imply that the first mark wasn't appropriate?

I am confused

Great minds...
Oh no i feel really scared now!:frown:
This is why you do STEM. For lots of questions, you're either right or wrong.
Oh jfc why couldn't I have finished my A Levels years ago and not have to deal with these stupid changes.
Well this isn't pleasing to hear
Sometimes I wonder why they can't just KEEP THINGS THE SAME. Why does it have to change every ****ing year, I don't understand, just keep it the same to keep it as fair as possible.
I don't understand why they can't just let us do well?
If a different marker thinks a person deserves a higher grade, give them a higher grade because why not.

It's the marking of them that costs the money, to be fair. More time spent marking means more expensive exams.
