why do women thing about sex far more than men?

ps - this is just a working assumption I might be wrong - and it should be "think" not "thing" - but works just as well I guess.

I base my evidence on women's reading material. Its full of novels in such categories as "bodice ripper",Jilly cooper-eque sex romps and your pretty average Caronation St episode.

Men tend to read, sci fi, car repair manuals and action adventure. They often have some sex/romance in them, but the main thrust of the novel has nothing much to do with sex/romance (eg Worlds End movie - basically a pub crawl with zombies).

Why do the sexes have such different amounts of sex/romance within their novels?

Is the answer simply because women think about sex far more than men?
OR
Is there another reason?

I think basing this assumption off of reading material is not a good thing to do. This is because there are significant gender differences in the amount of fictional reading between men and women. However this doesn't mean men think more or less about sex than women.

It is notably more common for women to read novel based around sex than men. This is because in terms of evolution women think more emotionally about sex as their main goal is to find a good partner to mate with. It is risky for a female to be less thoughtful about sex because if they cannot sleep around as much as men due to the risk of pregnancy (although with contraception these days that isn't as big a risk.)
As a result of this, you may find women read more sexual novels because they can engage with the imagery on a more emotional and this satisfies their sexual needs more than alternatives, such a porn.

However men do not put the same amount of thought into sex as their main goal when mating is simply to impregnate the women. He has the option to walk away and choose another mate countless times for the duration of his life. As a result men have less of an emotional attachment to sex and so are more likely to engage with sexual thoughts using porn, which men watch a lot more of then women. They do not require the same emotional depth when considering sexual experiences.

Of course you cannot suggest everyone follows the evolutionary approach because society and social norms have changed a lot, but there is a clear difference in how men and women engage with sexual thoughts, so the fact that more women read sexual novels may not be about how much women think about sex, more that it is to do with the way women think about sex.

Men read or look at porn more than women?
This is actually probably an "urban legend".
From surveys:

http://www.bustle.com/articles/118394-this-is-how-many-women-watch-porn-every-week
"
Women love porn. We need to accept it. We need to embrace it, because it's just a fact. Luckily, there does seem to be an increased awareness about women and porn in recent times. In fact, Marie Claire recently released a survey of over 3,000 readers to look at women and porn. Some of the information is no surprise to those interested in female porn-viewing the fact that straight women often prefer lesbian pornography, or that women are far more likely to seek out BDSM or group sex in pornography than men, has been covered before.
"

you could argue further, that womens fashion industry revolves around sexual arousal or that whole religions, such as Islam, revolve around the sexuality of women - kind of like self punishment for being interested in sex.

I must admit after I wrote this I kept on thinking of that Game Of Thrones episode where the queen has to walk through the town with a woman behind her ringing a bell, shouting

RING "Shame!" 5 seconds delay
RING "Shame!" 5 seconds delay
RING "Shame!"

all the way back to her home - perhaps the desire to wear a Burqa or similar is linked to feelings of guilt - a guilt that sexual thoughts are not always nice and romantic.

Men are too busy masturbating to think about sex.

I think what I would ideally like to see is an androgynous future. From what I understand "angels" are androgynous so, I guess humankinds deep seated view from pre-history, is that we should slowly move towards that androgynous goal as an ideal society

Too simplistic and stereotyping.
I like to think the answer is more likely that the male and female brain are identical.

I'm not sure how adding weird (I don't even understand it) humour furthers the discussion.

Surely all you are doing is being rude?

Its not really an opinion, its an assumption based on reading material .
I think it would be interesting for an author to develop romances for a male readership, it might be a whole new market
