for q4, which way does the frictional force act on the rod when in contact with the sphere?

I know the frictional force acts to the right on the floor but not sure about the sphere?

how are we meant to know? like what's the physics behind this :biggrin:

Reaction will be perpendicular to the sphere at the point of contact and the friction will be perpendicular to the reaction, so will act parallel to the direction CB.

Physics behind it is that the rod will 'slip' tangentially to the sphere 'downwards' (just imagine in your head how the rod will slip and in what direction it slips) - so the friction opposes this motion and acts in the opposite direction.
