gaming laptop

Thinking about buying this new laptop, will be using it alot for gaming and for other usual things like work and for uni etc etc. Would this laptop be able to play big games smoothly?

HP 15.6 screen
Windows 10
i5-6300HQ Processor
Memory: 8GB
Storage: 1TB & 128 GB SSD
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M

Also the SSD is a little on the small side. Once you've installed windows you will have enough space for maybe 1-2 games and you don't really want to run it through the 1TB hard drive as it will be pretty slow in comparison.

Try to convince him to not get an Alienware, if you love your brother this is the right thing to do. They are criminally overpriced, you're so much better off building your own, I saved over last summer and built my rig now. It cost me around £1500 but to buy an Alienware with the equivalent components, it would cost well over £2000...

The issue with gaming laptops is that they don't offer particularly high performance for the price, especially with battery life.
With that laptop you would likely end up paying games on low to medium, but then you have the issue of battery life and I don't think it would last long enough for lectures (some gaming laptops last 2-3 hours because the battery cannot keep up with the rest of the specs inside)

I think the best thing would be to spend £600 on a desktop and then £200 on a small laptop that is used only for things such as word processing in lectures.
If you spend that £600 BUILDING a computer yourself (far easier than it sounds) then you can get a high performance computer out of that - not one that entirely maxes games, I don't think, but can near enough do that.

In regards to your issue of carrying the desktop around, you could build a mini-ITX desktop and so the case itself would be very small, therefore you wouldn't really have an issue of transport.
