Do I need a degree in a language to use it professionally?

In the job descriptions I've come across, I've generally seen not.

Is this the case in anybody's professional experience?

The short answer is no.

However, if it is for a professional job then in order to pass the application stage you will probably need a formal qualification that demonstrates your fluency in the language.
For example the IELTS for English.

Each company will have different requirements and levels of fluency.

Eg, If you're working for a German call center, you may need more than GCSE German for the job.

Apply, the worst that can happen is they say no. You have nothing to lose.

You could also call the company directly to ask specifically what they're looking for. Just remember 'an informal chat' is never just that, so have questions prepared beforehand!

Generally, no. Some companies will require a formal qualification, however freelance generally doesn't. You could also take formal proficiency tests to prove that you have a C1/C2 level on the CEFR, however you'd probably want to check with the company to see if they would accept that.
