D1 (MEI) - Critical Path Analysis

Is the dummy, coming off of activity D (which is setting precedence for activity F) really necessary? If so, could someone please explain why?

Thanks

As far as I can see it's not, and activity D can run directly into the event preceding activity F.

Having a dummy there does not effect precedence, and the activity is uniquely defined by its start and end points without having the dummy.

I would be interested to know if there is a justification.

Edit:
I refer you to the diagram at the end of this page, in regard to activity F being dependent on activities D and E. Two activity-on-arc options are presented.

Ah yes, so there are two solutions for an activity-on-arc network in this case. If both solutions were indicated on the mark scheme that would cause a lot less confusion.

I appreciate the help ghostwalker!
