York Accommodation?
Hi guys! I'm having a lot of trouble choosing where to apply for accommodation. I've firmed York, however I don't have a clue where to apply to. I'll be studying maths (hopefully) so I would prefer it to be close by, but as long as it's good accommodation I don't mind going anywhere. I'd also like ensuite with self catered. Anyone wanna help me out?
Hello Karambir, I'm currently a first year studying Maths. James is usually the go to college for Maths as the maths department is centered in James college. This should also give u the highest chance of have fellow mathematicians as flatmates. For James college all but N-block are fairly good accommodation and just choose self catered accommodation if that's what u want. I would advice booking the accommodation as early as possible as accommodation can go quickly! Hope this helps!

I will be at York on october as a visiting student (France) studying history. What is the best between getting an accomodation on York campus or outside in the town with roommates, according to my age and level (I will be aged of 20 and in my third year of bachelor). I was told people who live on the campus are younger. Thanks !

If I were you, I'd go with on campus accommodation (both Hes East or Hes West). On campus is cheaper than off, and of course is much closer (barely need to travel to lectures). From the off campus rooms that I've seen, I think most on campus rooms are nicer, and if something goes wrong, the on campus people are more likely to care.
As for being worried about people being younger than you on campus, I definitely wouldn't worry about that. Most people I've met are between 18 and 21, and really, such small differences don't matter at all

I don't know anything about a certain college having more international students (I don't think there is). If I were you, I'd just look at what you want from the college (ie sports/music/parties etc) and whether you want cheap/expensive accommodation/ensuite/catered etc

The problem is that visiting student can't choose their accomodation, that's why I was asking if the administration put us in the same place or spread up everywhere. Anyway, thanks for your answers

Oh right OK. I'm afraid I don't know that many visiting students, but I think you get treated as anyone else and just get spread around.
Depends what you want the most. Do you want to be close to maths? Choose James. If you want a good time, like going out and drinking, choose Langwith (I've been here, it's the best, don't listen to anyone else) or derwent. It just depends, just don't choose halifax

Accommodation is not that nice but the main reason for why people not like it is cause it's quite far away from everything, buses don't go there and it's quite a bit of a trek to get to a bus stop if you're going out or even lecture or the library. It doesn't seem to be that bad on a map but it is

A good place to start figuring out which college is for you is by reading the introduction to the college on both the accommodation pages and the individual college pages.
The facilities for each college do vary, so this is likely why some are seen as 'musical' or 'social'. Derwent for example has D bar and YUSUs Courtyard bar located within it so it will be more lively compared to a college without a bar. Vanbrugh has a lot of music space available for students to book and the Sir Jack Lyons Concert Hall is also situated next to the main College buildings.

Theres nothing wrong with Halifax per se, its just a bit of a 'meh' college. It's not as far from campus as everyone makes it out to be; there's a bus from the college to campus and walking from even the far end of the college to campus is no more than 5 minutes (plus another 5 to the far end)(bear in mind that Hes East is easily three times further from Hes West). There's not as much to do, but if you have friends/housemates that go out and do stuff, the social life is essentially the same as the other colleges (minus the 'college atmosphere').
As for the music/sporty/social colleges, I'm not sure how much a difference these make, as there are plenty of university-wide things for these that you can take part in, but people say that James is the 'sporty' one, Langwith is the 'music' one and Derwent is the 'party' college, though if I were you, I wouldn't just base your decision on just that.

Hi,I was just wondering if I could get some advice. I am going to be staying on campus at York at the Medical School but I am a mature undergraduate student (20) and I have been given options for any preferences I may have. I am trying to decide whether to go for living with postgraduates, upper year undergraduates (I think 2nd year+) or other mature first year undergraduates. I would really like to get to know people and I want to be able to make friends with people in the same boat as me but I also think it would be good to get advice from upper year students. However I don't want to be isolated with just a specific group of people. Can you please help me decide?Also, I have chosen my accommodation (first Halifax) but I have been hearing that its not that great. I really want to meet lots of different people and socialise a bit. Can you also suggest another college for me to join?Thanks
