Anyone know what colour of a flame, alcohols, alkanes and alkenes burn with? Im getting told two complete different colours in my textbook and revsion book


Methanol and ethanol burn with a clean blue flame.
Alkenes burn with an orange flame
Alkanes are unreactive

Thanks! Are you sure alkanes cannot be combusted?
Also, How is hardness in water removed by boiling? Like in terms of ions

They do, with a blue flame.

Alkane + Oxygen -> Carbon Dioxide + Water and heat energy i.e exothermic (plentiful supply of air)
So using the formula CnH2n+2 with Methane

CH4 + 2O2 → CO2 + 2H2O

They'll also combust in a limited supply of oxygen to form the toxic gas carbon monoxide (odourless, colourless and dangerous because it combines with haemoglobin in your blood and starves the body of oxygen)

Anyone do double award chemistry?? If so, was the question on writing the addition polymerisation formula the one for pvc?

Anyone else think that chemistry test was impossible? I was so confused i didn't even get the iron oxide formula and i wrote endothermic instead of exothermic haha

What did you guys write for why the preciptate disappeared in the limewater?
****. That chemistry unit 1 paper was a okay. Better than last year I think.

Colour change when sodium bromide and sodium gas react?

I put red-colourless. But I think it was white-colourless?

Also. The last question everyone got 365 and I got 36.5 :/. I suppose it's only 1 mark but still. I think I aced the 6 markers and 9 marker!

What did you have to do for drawing (dot and cross) for the sodium compound?

I drrew 2 sodium atoms and 1 of the other 1..

Oh, didn't know that either. 36 I put or something. Had no idea to be fair. I know that I have lost about 5 marks. Hopefully not much more, need a high A

I had 36 at one point but then did something else which I'm pretty sure was wrong! For the colour change one I said it goes from green to brown.

I am so nervous for it lol but i only have 4 exams left thank goodness. 14 down 4 to go
