Would have said Runescape but they've upgraded their engine so you have to download it now.

Try League of Legends or DoTa out to

Hereos of the Storm is pretty good to get into now that Season 1 has started. I enjoy it and a few LoL players have preferred it. (It's free)

Counter Strike Global Offensive is probably a great choice. You can get it cheap on G2A.

Overwatch is really fun but costs a lot.

Considering the steam sale coming up soon, a few singleplayer games you might like-
Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor
Undertale
Witcher series
Metro 2033
Dark Souls series
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

How exactly do you play all these games in a web browser without downloading anything?

Not a massive fan of online games as I prefer games you can download and play, usually I go onto sites like Miniclip, GamesFreak and Free Online Games as well as Mousebreaker. It depends on what you like to play though.

Didnt realise primary school children used this site

Harsh, it has Agar.io and 8 Ball Multiplayer, but I rarely play online games anyways.
