Incidentally my wife generally opts for "hot".

Hot or cute are ok.

Adorable is not a compliment at all. It is patronising and indicates that you are very much in the friendzone.

I have been called cute but never adorable.

Imo girls would only call a guy adorable if they considered themselves higher status than him.
