Why do people pay thousands for the priviledge of being able to drive?

I wont bother pointing out all the things that piss me off with driving, suffice to say that the roads these days are a total farce. If you dont already require a car for work etc, why would you bother spending the ridiculous amount of money required to drive a car? Given the state of the road infrastructure these days, the car is no longer a practical means of private transport. Its certainly not worth thousands of pounds anyway.

Um, because not every town/city has a good public transport system?

Try being in St Neots in Cambridgeshire which has buses take 45 minutes to do 2 miles and are timed to miss the train by 2 minutes.

A lot of jobs have it as an unspoken requirement
Totally agree. I have been cycling everywhere on and off since I was 8. In rush hour traffic, a bike will beat a car on most journeys up to 10 miles in distance. And if I do end up getting my own car (we share one at present) it will likely be a cheap banger for less than a grand.
True, I live in the heart of London and public transport is usually better for most things. However, I go out of London a lot so I do need it, places in Kent for example having to take a 7 mile bus journey after leaving the station is not my idea of fun.

Also, whether I need a car or not doesnt matter for me personally. I love cars, it's my hobby and passion so personally Im willing to cash out.

For a lot of people, like my friends for example, I dont understand why they need it.

Because I don't want to turn up to work bathed in sweat from cycling in, nor do I want to get up an hour earlier, to pay more than the petrol, insurance etc of driving costs, to use public transport, just to not own a car.
Because being in a car is like being in your own little private space. No crazy drunk guy on the bus. No sweaty people on the tube. No walking outside when its pissing down with rain and getting soaked. I used to cycling, until I nearly died doing it on the roads. Its far too risky to cycle in London for me to be able to take it up. Cars are also faster unless you're driving in rush hour traffic or through central London. It can carry people, give lifts, pick up and drop off heavy items etc. There are loads of benefits and yes it costs a lot but its a luxury for the most part. Why have a 55 inch TV when you can have a 21 inch one that does the same thing?

When I was living in Bristol it was pretty essential to get around, it'd be way quicker than getting the bus. Traffic has gotten worse in Bristol but taking the bus is still slower. Now that I'm in London, it's obvious that going through central during peak hours or anywhere during rush hour traffic you'd be better off getting the tube. For me, I've decided to keep my car and yes, it's a luxury. Maybe I have to leave the house a bit earlier than usual but heck is the next 45 minutes going to be more relaxing than dashing through the rain, the crowds and having to put up with the stench of food, weirdos or some teenager broadcasting their music. The day people stop being so disgusting on public transport and learn some public decency I may consider using it more often.

I agree - I live in Bristol and although the traffic has got worse I wouldn't get rid of my car. Also, there's no public transport route to where I work. Motorbike tends to make quick work of Bristol traffic too so can't complain too much.

I tend to spend a fair bit of time rock climbing in North Wales and the Lakes and am not interested in spending hours of my time trying to get to remote crags when I only have a weekend.

Because. FREEEEEDUUUUUURMMMMM *Scottish accent*.

I love cars and I spend a fair bit on mine. They're fun and characterful!

The bus can do one as far as I'm concerned. They're filthy, slow, noisy little misery boxes. People spit out drinks and the floors either smell like bleach or the remnants of a night out.
Cars are magnificent!
Why would you go a peice of **** bus when you can have a car!
You can go where you want, when you want to, without catching every illness known to man!
Public transport isnt my thing (although the tube is pretty awesome!).
But cars are the best form of transport! Period!

The majority of people are lazy and prefer the sedentary lifestyle that car ownership offers them. It's no surprise that the average Brit is so rotund.
