I have a cochlear implant so I can hear somewhat, so yes I know how animals sounds although I can't always identify them.

I know people like listening to music, and there's different types of music but tbh they all sound the same to me.

If I were to switch off my cochlear implant then yeah it'd be easier but I don't because I'm too paranoid to

My secondary school gave me amazing support due to my severe to profound hearing loss in my right ear and my modrate hearing loss in my left ear
But my sixth form didnt offer me much support. They decided to give me a dictaphone :s-smilie:

so i could record lessons but it wasnt effective but i sat at the front of the class so i could be able to lipread and hear what the teacher said :smile:

Hope the sixth form/college you go to has good SEN unit :h:

Just curious do you wear hearing aids?

Argh, mine was only half an hour away but I thought it was so worth it! Oh no, that's a shame, so are you in sixth form now? It was the same in my secondary school, but I think it was kind of good cuz it meant more independence.

Hmm, in primary school, it was obvious and so I was excluded and not really given a chance to socialise/mix with the mainstream kids which was painful. Then in secondary school, I wore a hijab so it wasn't obvious and when people did ask me and I told them, they didn't really care which I loved.

Now I'm in college and I haven't really dared to tell anyone besides the nosy ones who ask (why can't people just mind their own business >.> :wink:

because I don't want people thinking differently of me/pitying me/ I'm really paranoid and insecure about it.

How about you? How did you find people reacted to you and did you manage to cope after a sudden lack of support in high school?

Well I'd say my hearing aids help me hear things 80% of the time, there are a lot of situations, which I'm sure you're familiar with, that I do struggle with such as group conversations and when people cover their mouths or talk way too quietly. I wish people would understand that even though they can help me hear they don't fully compensate my entire hearing loss.

I'm going to start sixth form in September but it's at the same college so it will be the same LSAs supporting me but very likely even less than they did. I know how you feel when you talk about worrying about people thinking about you differently. In year 7 I had to give a transmitter to the teachers that taught me at the start of every lesson. For the first few months I was okay with it because I was used to using it from primary school however it wasn't long before I was being bombarded with questions from people I didn't really speak to, which terrified me.

I resulted in not handing the transmitter over to teachers, who obviously after a while knew something was up. So I had to go to one to one meetings to talk about ways to get around it, but it still made me feel different from everyone else which I hated.

Unfortunately I received a bit of abuse during yr 9 and 10 from a few students and even at one point a teacher towards my deafness. I used to be very comfortable with who I was but as I made the transition to secondary, I lost so much confidence to the point I dreaded and felt sick inside every time I had to tell someone I have a hearing problem. I just wanted to be treated like everyone else which sadly I didn't get.

I think it's great you created this forum, even though I have a few deaf friends they never really feel like talking about the things that bother them which I do admire in them but sometimes the best thing to do is just let it off your shoulders :smile:

I do wear hearing aids, what about you?

That sucks the dictaphone wasn't effective but great you found alternate solutions, are you still at sixth form or are you working/ at university?

I also wear hearing aids but in one ear only in my better ear. I might go for a checkup soon and see if it would be better if i wear them in both ears :smile:

I have finished sixth form just got exams and then uni :smile:

I never had an SEN plan tbh but i will get one for uni
