Could 16 year olds have swung the referendum?

I am from England. I and many other people around my age (16) and my brothers' age (20) believe that the UK should have stayed in the European Union.

I don't want anyone to blame the whole of England for the Brexit happening, as there is still the 43% of people who wanted to remain and most likely some of the people who voted leave, who are now very disappointed and regretful.

I am sorry that some people's optimistic beliefs of success outside the EU overthrew the actual facts and benefits that the EU gave us.

As many people have said, it is saddening to think that the people who threw the vote are the older generation who the Brexit will most likely not effect.

I now have little prospect to go to University abroad or even in the UK due to the cost, I have no idea how life will be outside the EU but I don't hold high hope for it. However, I do wish that 16-17yr olds could've been allowed to vote as I believe it would have made a massive effect on the outcome.

Don't worry we'll be fine without the EU. We can finally be run by our elected leaders instead of bureaucrats from Brussels.
I don't know if they could of changed it or not, but i think that they should of been given the opportunity to vote on their future. x

Doesnt really matter. I bet if we redo the referendum altogether REMAIN would win.

Point is, the young people have to live with the decision that the elderly made for us. One which we did not want.

We should have been given the chance as it is our future. It may not have changed the overall vote but it may have meant a different approach to campaigning from both sides which is what was needed to have changed the vote as the Remain campaign was weak and sadly dispassionate in comparison to Boris Johnson and Leave. At least if we had a say in our future we would be slightly less angry at the result now that old people have changed it for us. Selfish xenophobes have not thought of their children and grandchildren and this had led to todays situation.

Democracy produces bad results at the best of times, adding more brainwashed naive people to the mix isn't going to help.
Nope. Not a chance. The numbers just aren't there to do it.

You'd need something like 85% in favour of remain or even more (to account for extra leave votes), assuming a 100% turnout. The national turnout was something like 72%, which is below 1.2M based on your figures, and therefore 16-17 Y/O wouldn't have had a chance to swing it. They only would've made the results closer, but it wouldn't have swung the vote the other way.

I think so. I'm currently in Year 11 and we were talking about this in our form class. There are 24 of us and only 2 said they would vote leave.

Those who are less educated and usually the older generation decide to vote leave. But for the older generation, the changes made to Britain wouldn't really affect them as they've lived their life, haven't they?

Have you just done GCSEs?
I genuinely think the result would have been very different if 16-17 year olds could vote. :frown: It's our future, every university chancellor said they support remain so this is going to cost a lot for students.
