University comes from the latin word universitas. It means a whole, corporate body

The word is derived ultimately from mediaeval Latin via Old French, universitas - a group of scholars.

Wikipedia says that the word 'university' comes from the Latin universitas magistrorum et scholarium, which means 'community of teachers and scholars'
why is the name we give things called that?

It really doesn't matter
