What A-Levels should I do to do a law degree?

I'm pretty sure I'm going to do history but I'm not sure about the rest of my A-Levels. I know that English is good for law but I really hate English so I don't want to do that. I'm thinking of doing maths or economics but I don't want to do both so which is better for law? Is government and politics good for law? I find politics quite interesting but I've heard that it's a "soft" a-level. I think for my 4th option I might do biology, chemistry or physics to keep my options open. So what would be the best a-levels?

Don't bother doing A-Levels in subjects you hate, you will seriously regret it - you'll hate it so much and you won't have any motivation to work hard in it and you'll fail.

History will definitely be good, it's worth doing politics as long as you're not doing more than 2 soft subjects.

Maths will be better than economics but please don't do it if you hate it.

Have you considered languages?

Also, the fact that you're undecided between all 3 sciences as a 4th subject is slightly worrying - surely there is one like you the most? Physics is the hardest A-Level though and Chemsitry isn't top far behind, so don't do either if you hate it and have no desire to do it after A-Levels. Biology is very, very content heavy and again, will kill you if you don't want to do it after A-Levels.

Maths is more widely taken and likely more respected than Economics, but in a similar way to English, don't take a subject unless you're passionate, otherwise you won't be motivated when it gets difficult - so it's better to do Econ if you much prefer it, for example, and get a better grade. Politics technically isn't a facilitating subject, but I took it and received 4 Russell Group offers, with no issues from my teachers reviewing the application, or the admissions tutors, regarding the subject - it's certainly not viewed the same as Media Studies, for example! It was really interesting and had links to law, with judiciary and parliament topics, so I do recommend it. A science A level could be an interesting choice if you have significant interest in the subject, but it won't be particularly appropriate to a law degree in regard to skills - though that wouldn't be an issue, as grades are largely the most important thing!

Basically, if you're passionate about your choices and have got at least one or two essay subjects, your choices should be fine.

I think either maths or economics would be fine for law, however maths is favoured more highly by universities than economics, so perhaps maths would be better to take. Government and politics would also be good :smile:

For Law you can take any combination of subjects in terms of the entry requirements. Literature subjects such as English or History are given good options, and Maths/Economics shows a broad range of skill sets. I would, however, just do subjects you enjoy and are confident at. The good thing about Law is that there are no compulsory subjects, but there's often high grade requirements; important to keep in mind when choosing subjects.Taking a language A Level means you can do more types of Law courses such as Law with French or Law with Spanish so that's also worth looking into.

Between maths and economics, economics is probably a better choice. In addition to this, you need to show off your analysis skills so history is a good option. Government and politics is good as well. So an ideal law student:

Gov & politics, physics, history, english.

But for you:

Gov & politics, economics, history, physics (? if you like maths, it’s a really good option and useful for law)

Mathematics, Psychology and Philosophy.

Economics would be good and more so to specialise in commercial law.

Government and Politics would be just as good to get into that realm of how laws are made etc.

If you can go for all 5 then bingo.

I wouldn't choose history for a law degree but then again it is a good substitute for politics if you decided to go for all 5.

A level econ is a super watered down version of the real subject, it gives you an overview of many things but no chance to really delve into much of anything. I'd encourage people to take it if they're interested but it won't help with commercial awareness aha

Law is very open, it doesn't really matter what you pic, as long as you show logic and analytical skills e.g. History maths science etc. Even sociology.

If you only want to do one of either maths or economics, do maths because it's broader and will compliment a science if you do one (mainly chem or physics)
