So all that hard work for nothing? Great! Might as well settled for a 2.1 degree whilst having sex with 10 girls

It is true though. If a first class degree is not worth much in the first place, then what was the point in even sacrificing everything.

There's more to university than just academia. A degree is nothing but a foot in the door-what you learn from the entire experience, both inside and outside the classroom, that earns you the jobs.

Employers want to know that you can do more than just sit in a library and memorise course content. They want people skills, analytical skills, personal adaptability, time management, organisational skills and the ability to network, skills you'll only develop from getting involved with things outside the classroom

What's the point of having a first class degree classification if it's worth as much as a 2:1?

Surely if it only looks pretty on paper then everyone should just aim for the 2:1 and just get pissed every night

+1 REP, Exactly that my friend! Why work extra hard to get a first class degree classification when it has the same value as a 2.1. Plus I get really annoyed and pissed off when people get happy for getting a 2.1 degree AND they get some like £35K+ job at some top company! There is a massive difference between people like you and me who get a first class degree AND people who get 2.1 degrees - yet these stupid employers don't see that. No, they would rather employ some **** boy who has sex with 10 girls and gets pissed every day

If you have a first class degree PLUS the work experience, people skills, adaptability, time management, etc. etc. then that gives you the edge over a similar candidate with a 2:1 I guess.

If you spend all your time at uni not socialising, not having a job, and sacrificing everything just to get that first, then it might be worth taking a step back and making sure you get those other experiences as they are equally important.

Really? REALLY? Funny you say that.

So what are employers looking for then? People with 2.1 degrees who go around getting wasted and having sex with 10 girls? Seems like a good person to hire right?

The point is why classify a degree when at the end it doesn't even matter?

In my opinion, if an employer does not hire a first class graduate then they are deluded and jealous!

This attitude is more of a liability to you getting a job than anything to do with your application. Would suggest getting rid of the entitlement shtick.

Well "everyone" isn't prepared to be lackadaisical, some want to strive for the best because of their own personal goals not to appease the minds of recruiters.

Well based on what people have been saying on this thread about how it does not matter about getting a 1st class degree, it is equal to a 2.1 - of course I would suggest something like that. Besides why would an employer care so much that? I thought they were the kind of people they were employing? I know a few students myself who have had sex with like 5 girls and paid people to do assignments AND now they are graduating with a 2.1 AND a good job!

I'm sorry but you are deluded if you think employers are employing people with 2.1 degrees who just get wasted and have sex. The job market is fiercely competitive, and these people clearly have other things on their cv- a part time job, a summer internship, a committee position in a society- which make them stand out far more than some muppet who spent four years reading books. If you honestly thought getting a first would make you more employable than experience and extra curricular activities you, quite frankly, are an idiot.

1. Your assumption that all 2:1 degree holders 'sleep with 10 girls' (seriously?) and 'get wasted' is ridiculous. That extra time they could have used to get a first was most likely put towards developing their skills via extra curriculars and leadership positions. Maybe, they actually have stronger interpersonal skills than the supposed 'Almighty First Class Graduate'? You know skills that are actually valued in a workplace

2. It differentiates those on the course. Some prefer to invest more time in academia, others may not. The first class classification will help undeniably if you wanted to stay in academia but in the industrial world, other skills are of more value

3. In your opinion, you want a job handed to you and a pat on the back from someone out there because you can put the phrase '1st class honours' on your CV.

I have all of what you mentioned. Whilst I worked hard for the first, I didn't lock myself in my room 24/7. I did go out and socialise, got a placement and etc...

Yes, so why wouldn't having personal goals to achieve the best not be a thumbs up for recruiters?

I'm not using it as the be all and end all, but surely some recruiters should take it into consideration.

They do take notice aha, but it's not a free pass if the rest of the CV doesn't stack up.

Anyways, the first part of your post is fair enough. Doubt you'll have many issues.

In what, exactly? If it's Golf Course Management; well, good luck with that. If it's Maths, but from the University of Edgware; again, no-one cares.

I think it is a Golf Course Management course from University of Oxford.

Oh, so I must be some idiot right - for graduating with a first class degree, being part of THREE societies, doing the weekly banking for a family friends' business, doing a minicab service via Uber, assisting with a martial arts club AND having 9 months of industrial experience? Some idiot I must be. How DARE YOU call me deluded? Maybe you're deluded! Next time you want to make such a claim THINK TWICE about who you are saying that to!

I mean you can paint all 2:1 degree holders the same but getting called deluded is too much? Uh huh.

Lol, people with 2.1s from a good uni usually have to work quite hard to get them, and if you get a First you can also have a fair amount of sex too...it's not all mutually exclusive

Oh wow - you really do piss me off! When the **** did I say that I wanted a job handed to me and a pat on my back?

I worked hard to get my degree unlike some people and no I did not lock myself in some room. For your information, I undertook extra courses - some of which were in leadership AND helped with running a martial arts club. Don't you worry about interpersonal skills - that used to be a weakness a few years ago - but now it is second nature and I have mastered it!

What am I trying to say is that I am not your typical nerd who sits in a room in front of a computer all day. I have been through the **** and struggle and have some experience working for a top organisation

Sounds like you're in a good position then

The point is not to assume that your first class degree is a magic ticket to any job. It forms only one bit of your applicatio
