Part III Tripos - Advice for external students?

I just finished my first year, got a first and I'm really interested in doing the Part III course at Cambridge specialising in number theory. I just wanted advice from current Camb students/people who have done the part III advice on what kind of degree average I should be looking to get as well as any other additional activities I should be doing to increase my chances? Thanks!

Get a first and a few good recommendations from your professors.

I don't know, but I don't think that matters very much. I'll let others step in and confirm, though.
Don't see how having a percentage in mind is going to make you more or less likely to get in? Just do the best you can and take it from there, there isn't really any other advice to give.

Does the university one applies from matter?
For example, I might be going to Imperial, and everyone knows how hard their exams are, so would it matter if my first wasn't high enough?
