I agree , now we (UK) can actually control EU migrants. Good point.

Or to be more precise, issue press releases claiming the government have.

Yes interesting, now that we are out, EU migrants will not have auto-right to stay in UK and will have to be treated equally with everybody else.

That is a step towards ridding the EU of racism, very good.

I have 0 confidence that government will prioritise research budgets or make these kinds of investments. Seems antithetical to their austerity policy.

I don't understand where the money will be coming from either.... but I'm feeling super doom and gloom at the moment.

I was discussing this yesterday with an economist at QMUL who specialises in EU policy and she was telling me that the true figure from EU research spending into the UK is towards £2bn, because a lot of it is also spent in scientific companies listed as 'private' but working closely with various universities on tie-in projects.

She was extremely pessimistic as well, sadly.

EU migrants are the only group of people that actually make any significant net contribution to our economy. What exactly do you intend to achieve by "controlling" them?

We're speaking of billion a year, it's not that huge. And the Tories are likely to drop a bit the austerity part as the government can currently borrow at actual negative rates.

I hope you are right

Well at least those foreigners won't be stealing our joobs from our own British researchers right

Yes, well we wouldn't want any more like Andre Geim, University of Manchester Nobel Prize winner, inventor of an entire new industry and dedicated to paying tax and living in the UK.

Another horrid and unproductive EU person to send packing.

Hmm, I'd like to see some hard facts in that but I really doubt since we were forbidden to test the English of EU workers, and let's face it most of them that come here (South and East EU) are pigeon Englisthhth speakers. They used to gain at our society's expense - very dangerous.

But you're right that's finish now, Brexit is Brexit as she said and we have to respect that and get on with it.

Tally ho ! don't you say ?
The answer is to reduce costs such as benefits to allow research progression

What were the leave voters thinking lol

I can imagine a lot of the non-traditional universities closing down or being in financial difficulty in the near future as the EU students/funding drys up.

I hate how some people saw voting to leave as a "punch" to the elite by the working class, if anything they've punched themselves in the face as when it comes to redundancies im sure the CEO's and MPs will have a lot more job security and prospects!

The problem I see is that universities are quite hostile to the Tories, so they may not consider them in the next funding allocation. The new government will also have to pay for councils as they won't get EU funds.

Universities will have to lobby the government. Ironically, the UK continues to pay the EU contribution now, but does not receive EU funds. I don't know whether it still has to pay after invoking Article 50.

Non traditional universities receive less EU funding than elite unis. Oxbridge would be the most impacted.

EU students are a financial drain, not a gain.

Geim already complained that he didn't receive much funding from the government. I remember reading that he said all the funding he received from the Northern Powerhouse plan went in the construction of the building.

I think he should threaten to go to the USA to get a "compensation" funding for British unis.

People like him, kicking up a fuss, can certainly have a big impact.

This is your response to people being deprived of opportunities, losing their funding and their jobs, and progress for the whole country being held back? Disgusting.

A Leave voter's reaction to all the childish hysteria on this thread....

LOL,middle class lefties with a sense of moral superiority who have no problem if people earn less and have higher job competition and house prices,MUH research money,we should have stayed to contribute to the eu so the half of our tax money we get back can go into research. If you don't like it,go live elsewhere, this country has enough unpatriotic people residing in it,so hopefully now, some will leave. You wouldn't care about Dave the carpenter earning 40 pound a day less, finding it harder to get work and having to pay more money than otherwise for housing,so why the **** would Dave give a **** about you and your research money lmao.
