This seems like great news (I am willing to overlook for the sake of this discussion that Theresa May is a Tory) and I wonder if we will now get even more women leaders coming through in countries that remain (in practise, if not in rhetoric) fiercely hostile to feminism such as Russia and China.

No, but it sets a role model for young women everywhere and I applaud that.
Surely someone who cares about equality won't care about whether a world leader is a man or a woman? I don't see why people are pointing this out- if they truly believed in equality, they wouldn't be talking about someone's gender.

Why don't we make this the year of good politicians taking power, regardless of their gender and not use their gender as a credential?

The fact that it's still a big deal, that women can be in powerful jobs, shows that we aren't quite there yet with equality. :/

As long as these positions are earned on merit , I couldn't care less whether they are female or male .

Oerlooking her policies would be voting for her despite the fact that you hate her policies but you vote for her anyway because she has a vagina, OP clearly wouldnt do that. It's still a nice achievement that we are living in a time when several world eaders are / about ot become women. Of course if we had a choice between a left wing male or a right wing female as PM we'd still choose the male! (im just generalizing)

No. To be precise, I meant that I am still pleased that a woman is PM even though she is a Tory - I certainly don't think she's perfect.

Well I think she will be worse for women on average. There is a load of protests right now about funding being cut for sisters uncut and other such anti FGM charities.

I supposed it is a tiny tiny victory but it is utterly dwarfed by the other crap.

-posit criminalising everything as a solution!
-support prying into everybody's personal lives!
-promise to bring down immigration and instead have little to no impact!
-defend the place of Shariah courts in society!
-avoid standing up for your views, for political gains!

I hope she turns out better than that, but yeah, I won't hold my breath about her policies - the fact that she's retaining Hunt as Health Secretary indicates that she supports the privatisation of the NHS with all the hurt that will cause.

I suppose the point is that it does nevertheless show that there are no limits for women in achieving high office.

Those radical left wing women Mayors in Spain are a better example of feminism seizing power imo.
