Why do so many people study economics in order to go into finance?

Why is it that so many investment bankers, accountants, traders study economics when no particular degree subject is required for these roles? Why is economics as a degree course so popular? I don't see the same amount of people applying for other non-vocational subjects like history and geography.

It's an interesting subject. And the type of people that do an economics degree are usually well suited to a career in financial services.

People who want to get into finance are interested in economics... otherwise they wouldn't want to get into finance.
People interested in economics are usually interested in finance because it is quite relevant to their course. Also, people in finance tend to also be interested in how the economy is performing and would want to study a subject like economics. Also, people in finance are very competitive and economics at a good university is very hard to get into.
For the bantz obvs
Cuz they associate econ with money
