Is this worth it?

Hi

I recently started a job that pays £80 per week. This job involves door to door sales ( cold calling ). The jobs also pays £35 per appointment a customer books, so say if I knocked on someones door and arranged an appointment for a specialist to view their house, I get 35 quid. However, the job involves working Mon - Fri 10am-7pm, and Sat 10am - 3pm. I went yesterday and found that people usually never answer their doors, and in the rare occasion that they do, they immediately say 'Not interested' so effectively i'm earning £1.78 per hour!

Im 17 btw
what are you selling though?

I would say it's not.. But I hate door to door sales, and would never consider buying anything from them, most I would use them for is research purposes with leaflets. And that wouldn't help the person giving it to me..

Do you work for a specific company that sells these products? If you know people don't answer their doors or shut the door on you when not interested, how about finding ways to save loads of time, money and complaints for the company?

Yeah I work for a company, but the thing is the marketing manager doesn't even listen to his own employees about where to cold call so I doubt that he will listen to me

Same, when I applied for the job, the description just said marketing team, however on my first day I was told we would be col calling, I also applied for the job because it was advertised that I would get 230-500 pounds per week, upon joining I was told it is 80 guaranteed per week.
It's not worth it. Having done that job myself for a couple of weeks during a uni holiday once, I know that people just don't want to sign up for things on their doorstep any more. As a homeowner, if I wanted to buy windows I would start with research online, not a cold-calling teenager.

It's better than nothing, but you could be doing something that will add to your cv as well as paying a proper wage. Good luck!

It's not a bad amount of money for a 17 year old, but considering you're working such long hours, it gets a quite a bit worse. I would say try and find something else, £35 for each booking seems quite low, considering the effort and rarity that you'd actually book one.

I would think your company cannot prove whether you've knocked at enough houses to advertise their product... so you could effectively spend your working hours running and it wouldn't affect your pay  Are you able to access a log of calls made to the company so that you know you're only going to see households that have placed orders with the company?

I like your suggestion, but unfortunately I go around an area with a supervisor :frown:

I agree that it's better than nothing, however after a certain amount of no's from people, you just get annoyed that you may not actually earn more than the 80 pound that you were promised, despite working the tedious hours. At the moment I have drafted a resignation email and am just waiting to make up my mind before 9:30. I had a talk with my parents, and my dad who works for an architectural company, agreed that this is a very outdated way of selling products.
