Syria's Nusra front cuts ties with Al Qaeda

The Nusra front, which was the Al Qaeda affiliate in Syria, has ended ties with Al Qaeda and renamed itself to Jabhat Fateh al Sham (Front for the conquest of Syria).

Abu Mohammed al Jolani, the leader of the group, made the announcement in a video message in which he showed his face, which is unusual given how secretive he's been in the past.

Al Qaeda supported the move. This wasn't a falling out or a rejection of Al Qaeda ideology, and Nusra/JFS is still a jihadist group like it always has been.

Nusra has been one of the biggest and most effective rebel groups in Syria, alongside Ahrar al Sham.
