Life of a student nurse?

Hi,

I will hopefully be a student nurse from September.. but there is one thing that is putting me off. I understand completely that studying nursing is no walk in the park and there is so much to learn and the placements are a big commitment. But, as an 18 year old who is moving away from home i was hoping that i would have some time dedicated to going out and enjoying the social side of uni. Will I? I know that i won't have as much time as most other students, but I don't want to completely miss out. I had a place at a local university but i chose to move away, and the main reason for this was to experience new friendships and independence.
I know this is a really stupid thing, but I think it is to be expected from someone who is 18:/

Im hoping to become a student nurse/midwife next year, i will also be 18. I think it depends on what type of placements you get, some are block and some are mixed with your studies. I think if you had block placements you will just get to socialise as much as anyone because say you work 3 12hr shifts a week, you have the rest of the week off essentially if you get what i mean. This exact subject has really been a big issue for me in deciding whether i want to do it but if your in nurses digs, everyone will be similar to you in regards to socialising and their timetable.
Hope that helps! Plus you may just be going through induction on freshers week so plenty of time to get to know people!

If you organise your time well youl be fine. I started in March and I have 2 children and a house to upkeep and at the minute I'm doing ok. Had the odd weekend out too. But I got my work done first :wink: good luck

You'll still have time to socialise and enjoy some of the "student experience", however there will be times where you'll have to prioritise placement or academic work over going out/playing for a team etc.

I moved out of home aged 18. I don't think its a stupid thing to do at all. You gain so much independence and truly learn how to look after yourself by moving away. As others have said, manage your time well and there is still plenty of opportunities to socialise! In my (Very limited!) experience student nurses/nurses know how to party!
