Why do people have a problem with wolf whistling

No I am not a mod, but I still have the right to guide and advise certain members of tsr about their use of wording and phrases.
I am just simply providing a normal discussion.

It's unsolicited sexual behaviour in a public place, so even if it isn't criminal, it probably should be.

I do not condone sexual harassment, but i am also against a policed state.

But I do understand as I have replied with a sympathetic post, but I also have to back my original point, as if a reasonable young a young guy were to whistle at young woman, it is not as bad as if a group of builders were to ogle a woman on her own.
The problem is people just want to equate the extremes that cannot apply to everyone.

Guys on here who simply don't understand why people have a problem with wolf whistling, well maybe you should imagine a scenario where your boss or university professor caught you wolf whistling at a stranger? How would you feel? And why?

You'd most likely feel embarrassed, and even a little ashamed of yourself. Because you know that wolf whistling goes against a number of social norms, it is inappropriate and considered sleazy. No self respecting man would ever wolf whistle at a stranger. Similarly, imagine if you caught your boss or university professor wolf whistling, you'd most likely lose a little respect for them.

Why is it that so many of you need to be explicitly taught such social norms? It's meant to be something you implicitly learn through socialisation, it doesn't normally require a verbal explanation. Maybe your social environment was somehow lacking, or you lack the cognitive ability to grasp such norms.


Or most likely you'd never dream of wolf whistling at a woman in real life. But behind the safety of your laptops and phones, you put on some bravado, and pretend that there's nothing wrong with it, when in reality when you are faced with the opportunity to wolf whistle you'd never dream of doing it.

Again, it isn't for you to tell women what they can and cannot wear. A woman can dress how she pleases to suit herself and no one else. You are making an assumption you have no right to make.

For starters I would not wolf whistle, i were in the workplace, and even If i were to be caught I would simply apologize and move on.
Interesting that you say that, but I never said anything about whistling at a random stranger on the street.
If I was in the a social setting, and I broke the social barriers I would wolf whistle.
Social norms can sometimes be seen as a fallacy when each generation have introduced a wave of social norms that would be considered self destructive and narcissistic.
No self respecting woman would wear next to nothing and see that as female empowerment
Again I have wolf whistled at women who have seen it as harmless banter.
