Hi there,

I got into the first faculty and just would like to know what will be happening on the 16th september and the week after that, and whether you know the most reliable agencies to find accommodation near the faculty? Also what sim card would you recommend for daily use and which bank is best for students?

As a first year in first faculty going to second year, I would recommend you dont follow the reading list provided by them as it is a big farce!

Yeah but you have to be fast and proactive!

The only books you'll probably want to have permanently are
1.Subotta Atlas of Anatomy
2. Langmans Embryology
3. Memorix Anatomy
4. Junqueira's Histology

So you think that if I buy these 4 books they will be enough to pass the first year? Also how much depth do you need to learn Czech , is it just basic medical terminology because I have been going hough grammar and basic sentences/ phrases? Thanks

Another thing, are the exams mostly oral or written and do you get given a timetable for the first semester including exam dates and lecture timings? Thanks

Exams are oral, you get tested every fortnight on identifying slides, you get written tests in Latin and Czech. Also you get two dissection exams which divide into a winter and summer one which is oral examining a cadaver. You get given an online timetable and exam dates for biophysics, anatomy and histology you have to choose your dates and the questions which you are examined on are random (pick a facedown card from a random assortment) and everyone gets examined by a different professor.

I'm guessing you are coming straight out of A levels?

Thank you so much. Yes I had just finished my a levels.

Do you think the 4 books above are enough for first year, obviously as well as the slides from each lecture? And, can you find past exam questions, or do you just have to memorise everything before sitting an exam.

Many people get Thieme Colour Atlas of Anatomy which really helped with the theoretical aspect of anatomy. Definitely helped me for first year. Crossmans Neuroanatomy was great with learning the basics of neuroanatomy which is compulsory in first year which you start learning in summer semester and it helps to read this before neuroanatomy lectures start. Instant Anatomy (Robert Whitaker and Nel Horley) was really helpful but not that important for dissections as Memorix Anatomy mentioned in my previous thread was the most popular for students.

Finally for Czech the textbook for is called Cestina Express which is only available in Prague but the czech bookstore selling it is right by the campus. The book for Latin is the Basic Introduction to Medical Terminology by Cerny Most who happens to teach at the faculty. The bookstore selling that is by Old Town,

Please dont follow their reading list as you'll throw a ton of money down the drain on books you'll never use! I have basically told you everything.

Costs me around 350 pounds a month including bills. CSOB bank i use for my student account and i got a vodafone student tariff which is about 16 pounds a month. If youre a Beer lover, Prague is the place for you.

Hi. The 16th is registration day and it can be quite a long day with lots of paperwork to complete. For accommodation there are so many agencies in Prague. I share a 3 bedroomed flat and we use: http://www.foreigners.cz/ . We all use our UK sim plans on our mobiles as most include Europe now. I would check with your current provider. During enrolment you will be advised on the banks in the Czech you can use and they will organize bank letters for you.

Hi, thank you very much for your advice.

I'm going to Charles to study dentistry. Do medics and dentists study the same modules? Should I buy those four recommended books as a dentistry student or should I steer clear?
