University of Hertfordshire 2016 - Extended Science Degree/MPharm

Hi,

I am applying for the Extended Science Degree course for September 2016, I was reading on the website that once you complete the 'initial year science', you are allowed to transfer onto Year 1 of your chosen course at the University of Hertfordshire.

I have some questions in mind:

1. Has anyone done the Extended Science degree (BSc)? If so, how is the course like? Does it compromise of maths, chemistry, biology, physics modules?

2. What is the pass mark to transfer to Year 1 of MPharm?

3. How are the lectures for the Extended Science degree? For example, the timing of lectures.

4. Is an interview required before progressing onto MPharm?

5. In general, how many students per lecture?

6. How are the lectures/timetable like for the initial science year?

7. Do the UCAS Points include AS (or equivalent), or just A2?

Thank you.

Hi LionKing101,

Yes the course is made of up of introductory modules in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics for Scientists.

Usually the pass mark is an average of 70% with a minimum of 70% in Chemistry and 50% in Maths for Science (or Maths).

Lectures are usually held over 3 days per week but the days can vary depending upon the Semester, and they are not necessarily full days.

Yes you will need to pass an interview along with a DBS check and a pass in occupational health.

This course attracts a large cohort of students and we usually run at least 3 or 4 groups depending upon numbers. The numbers studying a module can vary.

Minimum UCAS points required forentry are 120. This can be from one full A level or BTEC Level 3qualification (such as National Diploma), together with GCSEs in Maths, Englishand Science at grade C. Additional AS qualifications will be added to thetariff score but not without an A2 in place as well. Applicants will notbe eligible with only AS qualifications.

Hope this answers all your questions.

Thanks,
Brad

Hi,

I have just noticed something has changed on the website for University of Hertfordshire - Extended Degree in Science.

Initially, when I applied early this year, the course I applied for was Extended Degree in Science.

However, as I have looked at the website now it says:

Applications for the full time courses MUST be made via UCAS (), using the following specialist codes:

Initial Year for Extended Degree in Science Biological Science - B900

Initial Year for Extended Degree in Science Subjects allied to Medicine - B892

Initial Year for Extended Degree in Science Mathematics - G101

Initial Year for Extended Degree in Science Physical Sciences - F900

I'm assuming the UCAS code has changed and has now been divided into 4? I am not sure.

Could I please receive some information about this?

As I would like to go into Pharmacy, I would be applying for: Initial Year for Extended Degree in Science - Subjects allied to Medicine (B892). But, when I first applied in January, it just said Extended Degree in Science.

What does this mean, as I think the UCAS code has recently changed?

Edit: When I was given an offer for the University of Hertfordshire, the initial code I applied for was BCF0, but this is no longer available on the website, and has now changed to B892 - as I would like to apply for MPharm afterwards?
When I log onto track, it still says Extended Degree in Science, however, when I log onto my actual UCAS page it says:

University of Hertfordshire (H36) NOT COMPLETED
(There is no UCAS code, but when I applied early this year, it said: 'Extended Degree in Science - BCF0' )

Can I please receive some information as to what has happened?

Thank you.

Hi LionKing101,

The structure of this course has changed (not the content) so it makes it easier for applicants to choose the right route.

As this happened only quite recently we’ve decided that, rather than write to all applicants and ask them which route they want, you will be asked at the College before registration which UH degree you want to progress to and we will then move you onto the correct route.

Please don't worry about this, the staff at the College will be able to help pick the correct route for your future plans,

Cheers,
Brad

Hi,

Thank you so much for the information.

I just had a quick look on UCAS:

https://www.herts.ac.uk/courses/search?collection=herts-courses&f.Clearing%7CF=In+Clearing&query=!padrenullquery&f.School%7CH=School+of+Life+and+Medical+Sciences

The link above says these courses are available in clearing right now, does this mean they will also be available in clearing on results day? (18th August)

Thank you.

Hi,

Although there is a strong possibility it will be available on Results Day, as with all courses in Clearing, they will close as soon as they are full,

Thanks,
Brad

Hi,

For the Extended Science Degree - 'Subjects Allied to Medicine', does the University of Hertfordshire also take into account the Extended Project for UCAS Points.

Also, are these the courses that are currently available in clearing 2016:
http://search.ucas.com/search/results?Vac=1&AvailableIn=Clearing&ProviderQuery=University%20of%20Hertfordshire%2C%20&AcpId=1161&IsFeatherProcessed=True&page=1&providerids=1161

Thank you for the previous information.

Hi

So long as you use the extended project in conjunction with another level 3 qualification such as an a-level.

The list is correct, however from the day of results there may be a slight delay between courses being closed to applications and the website/s being updated to reflect this.
