Yeah, but the sort of students a "Women's Studies" course would attract are exactly the sort of people who would love to sit around and moan about perceived injustices with each other.

Just like a Nuclear Fission Physics course would attract a disproportionately nerdy group of people.

Because it's the taxpayer who contributes towards these people studying (generally).

There is not genuine snobbery in the student community, except for a few. Sure, you might see it online. But in real life, most people don't care what you study or where.

You speak as if History isn't a respect degree what with the "at least" and "some". It is. And I'm not saying that defensively because I don't study it, but I know people who have at my uni and they've had to work very, very hard to achieve the standards.

When you think about it, it probably can encompass sociology, anthropology, psychology, history even philosophy :dontknow:

It's just a very specialist area I suppose. I don't see how it's all that bad, if you are interested in persuing an academic, arts based subject.

I worked at my uni's library, and whilst I don't think my uni does gender studies as an undergraduate, I shelved many, many books related to that subject. It can easily be someone's PhD or Masters topic. What's so different to that compared to any other PhD topic?

Ultimately, my concern with Women's Studies is that it doesn't encourage critical thinking in any way, shape or form. That sounds harsh and disrespectful, but what I mean by that is that it simply accepts one side of an argument and utterly dismisses all truth contrary to its ideas.

When there is no room for true dissent in a discipline, there is no room for real growth. If you want to see someone shouted down very quickly, watch someone offering counter-revolutionary ideas in a Women's Studies classroom. This makes the study more of a dogmatic study than a true discipline- Which is fine as long as it is portrayed in the same way as theological studies, but it is portrayed as something that encourages critical thinking. That causes a disconnect with people who study philosophy, history or other tangential critical thinking modules.
