''Women's Studies is a load of rubbish!''

I bet a Nuclear Fission Physics course is just one big echo chamber to talk about atoms and how great nuclear fission is as an energy source.

What a waste of time.

LOL

Yeah, but the sort of students a "Women's Studies" course would attract are exactly the sort of people who would love to sit around and moan about perceived injustices with each other.

Just like a Nuclear Fission Physics course would attract a disproportionately nerdy group of people.

Why can't you all just mind your own business? What does it have to do with anyone here who studies what? Are those calling other people's studies rubbish paying the course fees? No you are not? There is far too much snobbery in the student community between universities and who studies what? The arrogance here is astounding and am sick of these types of threads. Like children in a playground. Grow up!

Because it's the taxpayer who contributes towards these people studying (generally).

There is not genuine snobbery in the student community, except for a few. Sure, you might see it online. But in real life, most people don't care what you study or where.
'Women's Studies equips you with the critical and research tools needed for women’s studies in the humanities. It provides a systematic introduction to feminist theory, and enables you to gain the skills necessary to engage in original research into topics in the humanities relating to women and to gender, in a university with excellent facilities for both traditional and computer-age research.'

Is it though? Subjects like History or Classics at least entail some kind of academic rigour. Women's studies is an unknown so I feel would be less valued by general graduate employers.

You speak as if History isn't a respect degree what with the "at least" and "some". It is. And I'm not saying that defensively because I don't study it, but I know people who have at my uni and they've had to work very, very hard to achieve the standards.

It's basically part of sociology and anthropology right?

When you think about it, it probably can encompass sociology, anthropology, psychology, history even philosophy :dontknow:

It's just a very specialist area I suppose. I don't see how it's all that bad, if you are interested in persuing an academic, arts based subject.

I worked at my uni's library, and whilst I don't think my uni does gender studies as an undergraduate, I shelved many, many books related to that subject. It can easily be someone's PhD or Masters topic. What's so different to that compared to any other PhD topic?

Of course, it's a very respected degree.

But it is still non-vocational

No, they echo and moan about nuclei, not atoms.

Completely mugged off. Nice one mate.

How about Men's Studies, OP? In other words, History.

Chemistry is also a non vocational degree but nobody is going to say it's a useless degree, are they?

So you're saying people do courses they are interested in?

"The term atomic physics is often associated with nuclear power and nuclear weapons, due to the synonymous use of atomic and nuclear in standard English "

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_physics

It's called nuance.

I'm on a student forum. Not writing a research paper. Standard English will suffice.

I know of someone who did it in the UK. They are also a massive feminist.

A massive feminist you say? Woah gotta watch out for those. Don't want to run into one of those pesky massive feminists, trying to promote equality for women and that.
Reading this thread, even if someone did study the subject I doubt they'd comment now. They'd get so much hate :/
According to the National Post, Women's Studies is, "
too political, too radical, and undeserving of an existence in the academy (Belyk 2009; Cole 2010; National Post Editorial January 25, 2010; The Current; January 12, 2010).

Here is the rebuttal:

Ultimately, my concern with Women's Studies is that it doesn't encourage critical thinking in any way, shape or form. That sounds harsh and disrespectful, but what I mean by that is that it simply accepts one side of an argument and utterly dismisses all truth contrary to its ideas.

When there is no room for true dissent in a discipline, there is no room for real growth. If you want to see someone shouted down very quickly, watch someone offering counter-revolutionary ideas in a Women's Studies classroom. This makes the study more of a dogmatic study than a true discipline- Which is fine as long as it is portrayed in the same way as theological studies, but it is portrayed as something that encourages critical thinking. That causes a disconnect with people who study philosophy, history or other tangential critical thinking modules.

I'd say that is a fair critique.

Does that word have an implied or deliberate double meaning by any chance? :giggle: :colone:
