Split the fraction up 124+454 \displaystyle \frac{12}{4}+\frac{4\sqrt 5}{4} it may make it easier to see that there is a common factor of 4 on top and bottom of both fractions that cancel.

Can you see how this example cleans up?

3y+6x3=3(y+2x)3\displaystyle \frac{3y+6\sqrt{x}}{3} = \frac{3\left ( y+2\sqrt{x} \right )}{3}
