What books do you recommend buying for the first year of the course?
To be honest there's only one book you're going to need which is The Principles of Anatomy and Physiology by Tortora (Helps SO MUCH with the Anatomy and Physiology module). The other book I would recommend but is not entirely necessary in my opinion is Essential Cell Biology. This is mainly to help with the Cell Biochemistry and Genetics module.
I would recommend NOT getting these brand new because uni books cost an easy £100 which is an astronomical price... You can get a good second hand book in almost mint condition for £20.
EDIT: You can live with borrowing stuff from the library for Pathophysiology of Disease because the knowledge is so vast and Biomed Skills is the easiest module you'll ever sit... No joke, no one turned up to the lectures...
