So I went to the mosque for friday prayers and it was mostly men there

A mosque has opened in my town recently so I thought I'd go and check it out as I have been interested in finding out more about islam too but I have to say I was surprised that it was about 98% men and really no women at all. To muslims here, is that the experience you have where you are? I just thought it would be more balanced.

That's kinda the whole point. Same at my mosque..mainly men. It's men who are required to go to the Mosque. Women can come too if they want (but it's not required), but they tend not too..there's a separate section for them.
Prayers are generally made in the mosque for men and women pray at home

I see, so why is there quite a big women's section then? :/ does it get used much?

Might be because women don't know about the women section yet since it opened new. The mosques that have them do get a lot esp during Ramadan.

when kids go to mosque the girls are usually in the women's department but women also use this area at funerals and taraweeh prayer (ramadan special prayer)
Yep
There were once 4 women in the friday prayer near me, and the ground floor where the men pray, was crowded as hell

The women's section could be for a time when unexpectedly a lot of women come. Or it could be when it is busy during Ramadan..in my local Mosque...the women section is used frequently in Ramadan during the optional night prayers (Taraweeh). The section can also be used to host small events there.

It's a new Mosque so I'm not surprised. Should improve over time..

Well..not necessarily. I've observed in my Mosque that it's usually more busy during Ramadan than any other time.

ah ok it's just different than I expected and just felt a strange vibe as there really were next to no women there but many men

Women have a seperate prayer section. Praying at a mosque isnt exactly a socialising event like church on sunday.
