Well the first pokemon game came out in 1996, so the guys in their 30s would have been barely a teenager or in their early teens at the time. All about the nostalgia and reliving those childhood dreams.

True but it takes a while to get good enough to start actually winning gym fights right? I would only find it fun playing with friends but it's not something I'd do on my own
