Is it possible to become a protein crystallographer with a Molecular Biology degree?
I recently developed an interest in Structural Biology/X-ray crystallography recently, and was wondering if it is easy/possible to pursue a career in protein crystallography with a Molecular & Cellular Biology degree? Thanks!*
Assuming you're a current undergrad, try and choose modules that are more biochem based. Then a masters and/or PhD will do it. If you;re still in school then do a biochem degree instead.

Thanks for your reply. I'm currently doing my undergraduate degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology (going into third year). Biochemistry and MCB students share 80% of the lectures:
- MCB students do modules on Development and Genomics
- Biochem students do an extra module on proteins ("Proteins 2") and one on metabolism.
It's unfortunate that I cannot do the extra module on proteins (I would love to), but I don't think I'll be allowed to change - I've already annoyed the admissions office quite a lot over the summer. Do you think that those modules are sufficient?
I don't think you'll be allowed to change at this point no. I tried going the other way (biochem to MCB and that wasn't ok either). You may want to consider doing a masters and try your luck at getting a relevant Phd at the same time and see where you get. Maybe also see if you can do a more biochem project.

Thanks - at least I'm not the only one who's been on the same boat! I will be doing an internship next summer in a lab which combines techniques in Molecular Biology, Biophysics and Structural Biology, and around half of my available projects for my final year (in the Plant Science department, because that is my specialism) combine both biochem and MCB.*

Big those up when you're applying for masters and/or PhDs and try and learn as much as possible about the field in the process.
