The answer is $3,895 and the explanation is 10% of $8950 + 15% of ($28950-$8950)= $895 + $3000
I don't understand where $3000 comes from.

Oh ok thank you, I thought that was a dash but I just realised it means minus.
The question is from the ukcat website - quantitative reasoning subtest.
