The Student Room Group

No friends in sixth form!!

So I started at a new sixth form in September, now it's June and I still haven't made any friends. I hang out with people and everyone at my school is really nice but I'm not too sure where I'm going wrong. Im kinda shy but I do make an effort to hang out with people at lunch in the common room and stuff.

Has anyone else had similar experiences? What did you do to make friends?

I'm in the same situation, I drifted apart from my school friends and struggled to make new ones. I sit with a group of people too, but everyone is quite opinionated and talkative which is difficult for me (I'm not necessarily shy but I never have a lot to contribute). I'd say try to talk more to the people in your lessons, as you'll get to know people from different groups. I don't know about you but my college is very cliquey, but I still have friends in other groups that I can talk to whenever (due to meeting them in lessons). Your classes may change as you go into year 13 too, so it's a good opportunity to speak to those you don't really know .

Omg 100% same! I do chat to people in lessons and there are a lot of people I get along well with but I never know how to go from just hanging out sometimes at school to being friends 🤔 My school is pretty cliquey too tbh and I feel like this makes it a lil harder to make new friends.

Good luck with making more friends!

Feel the same- i used to have a fair few but now im always alone...:frown: hopefully we'll all make some more friends at uni but i've always been pretty lonely.
I feel the same way. I speak to people at college who are in my lessons and a few from my high school but it doesn't go any further than that. I thought that when I went to college I would make loads of new friends but soon I realised that wasn't the case.

I've been told that the best way to make friends with someone is to speak to them outside of your normal situation, make plans with someone you get along with outside of college.
Hope this helps!
I'm in the same position, apart from I go to my school Sixth Form. It isn't easy, regardless of what people say about making friends at uni. I can only empathise and hope you get some friends soon.

This is exactly like me too! Wow thought I was the only one, my college is extremely cliquey and everyone seems to know everyone so it's quite hard to make friends with people when they are so content with their friend groups, hope our situations get better ahah!
i feel sorry for you guys, within the first 2 days of meeting new people on my work experience i was already friends with him, we'd always laugh and socilaise

maybe you guys are trying to make friends with the wrong people, ie nerds/introverts ins't a good combination with someone who is popluar or extorverted

I think work experience is a bit different to college but anyway, that's nice to hear!😊

Omg I feel the same way , I'm in second year of A levels but I just am not friends with anyone. I am acquaintances with everyone which is the issue and just wished I had friends. My friends left at the end of august so I'll be alone for the rest of the year :frown:
I have a sort of friendship group which I've known for a while but I feel like they're talking more amongst themselves (they all have a group chat which I heard about indirectly where i'm not in it haha) which is kind of saddening. Oh well, hopefully uni will be more promising. :h:

I'm pretty glad I found this post! I started Sixth Form last year and now in Year 13 but absolutely deplore it. I have tried to make myself accustomed to the individuals and the atmosphere which worked for a while but it is just not enjoyable at all. People talk to me but its rather them being polite as opposed to actually taking an interest in both making my acquaintance or in the conversation I wish to endulge in. There are a few friends around to balance things out from time to time but they take no interest in socialising outside of school, instead always taking the line that they are 'busy' or 'have coursework to get on with'. Sixth Form is supposed to be academically challenging and socially rewarding but the latter I just find is impossibly challenging with people being too judgemental plus relationships based solely on shallow pretences,..

I get what you mean like I started with my best friend so i had a base however i havnt made any other friends really. i have tried but tbh i just cant fake being interested in people that just act up for attention or social status. sadly that is the case but im just hoping that in uni there will be a wider range of people so i can find more people on my wavelength. i hope it gets better for you too but try to enjoy it as much as you can.
just leave it.. honestly just focus on grades. and make friends in uni i guess. Maybe invite them over or be like "oh i really wanna see this film, can you guys come with??" if you really wanna make friends. with me, I was friends with some really snake like people who just didn't bring the best out of me so yeah.. based on that, just focus on your grades

Absolutely, but I changed schools at Sixth Form hence why it was that little bit harder to blend in. Someone from my old school did join the same place but after a while he found a group and moved on whilst I've hardly made progress. There need to be more people like you and those in this thread-I'm trying to work hard for uni but the social aspect is quite large and definitely putting me off a variety of things. Like you, I also hope that things will get better at uni for everyone-but as someone with mild Aspergers that is something that needs to be assessed carefully..
