Dyslexia help at university

So I'm going into my last year of college in September and when I first started college they tested me for dyslexia. I only got moderate on the scale but it still holds me back, in highschool they refused to test me because I could still get at least a C in most subjects but in English I had to go and type my coursework up at lunch times resulting in me getting two Bs in English. Now in college I get to use and laptop in my exams and my lessons if I chose to (sometimes I like to try and write out my notes) and I get 25% extra time in my exams. Because it's definite that I am dyslexic even though I truly believe I am and have done for a good few years would I still recieve help at my chosen university? I struggle with timing, spelling, writing (I can't actually write for to long without my hand and arm cramping which is another reason why I type) and my reading speeds a little slow. I also don't focus on the words I'm reading leading to mistakes in questions and me rereading a question a number of times especially in exams.

I just don't want to go to university and be told that they can't help me because a college asseer assessed me rather than an outsider if you get what I mean

Your university can refer you to an educational psychologist for a full diagnostic report unless the person who assessed you at college had a valid spld screening certificate which they d accept. But they will definetly be able to help you, give their student support a call after the weekend and they should be able to explain everything to you :smile:

I always suspected I had dyslexia but wasn't tested until I went to University. Once I had the full test, I had a needs meeting as well. I was given a laptop, printer, scanner plus software to help with reading. I was given 10 working day extensions on all written work (I didn't have exams for my degree) and I had a dyslexic advisor who I could see to go through any written work and she helped me with ways to get through my dissertation and studying methods. I graduated with a 1st class honours and I'm about to start my masters. The dyslexic help was amazing!

Hey Lovewins, I am a fellow Dyslexic who made it through School un-diagnosed! I actually asked for an assessment half way through my degree, which was a little late in the day, but ho-hey..

When some is offered a place with us, they are asked to complete a questionnaire about any specific needs, on which you can highlight anything that either you have or has been identified for you as a specific need. If you put down, say , dyslexia, then you would be invited to an 'Assessment of Needs' where your requirements would be established and support put in place. This support varies from person to person.

There is all sorts of specialist software and equipment, along with support tutors, note-takers, extra time, funding etc.... From personal experience I cannot sing their praises enough.

i went to UCLANs open day today and asked them and they said to find out if the person who did my test was credited which i assume wont be the case but they said theyd email me and talk me through some options for getting properly assessed. thanks again guys
