How many societies did you/will you join at Uni?

Hey all! :wavey:

As we head into the Freshers' period once again, it's time to turn our attention to the societies and sports clubs that will eventually plague the Facebook Freshers' groups and fighting for your attention at the various Freshers' fairs.

For those currently researching their future uni, there's probably more choice than ever previously imagined! When I first started at Uni, I joined 6 societies. However that was too many for me, so ended up going to 3 on a regular basis.

How many did you join up to when you went to University? How many do you plan on joining if you're starting in September? :biggrin:

I ended up joining a couple, even for a subject I don't take :biggrin: Ended up never really doing any society events...

I ended up on four committee's last year - I do not recommend :lol:

To those going to universities, I definitely recommend joining 1/2; they're a great way of meeting new people outside of our course and university halls and you already have a shared interest which you can talk about! ^_^
I think 3. My country's society, the LGBT soc and a sports soc (looking at aikido).
When I'll go to university... 0, there to study not to focus on socialising.
Everyone vows to join a gazillion societies and signs up to everything at freshers fair then after the first month don't turn up to anything

At university, you definitely need a mixture of both. There are so, so many opportunities out there :smile:

I'd socialise ofc, but not on social events.

I was a member of the anime society in name only for my first year :lol: Defo planning to join more this year.

Plan to join:
Dance Society
Comp Sci Society

and anything else that looks semi interesting during the freshers fair.
Would it be a good plan to sign up to everything I'm interested in, then rule them out? Because there's like 10 choirs at my uni that I want to join... :P
I'm not going for another year, but I'd love to join something to do with archery (and maybe attend some competitions) and some others.

But yeah, archery is my main one :smile:
stupid question, but, what "happens" in a society ?
There's one society I'm definitely going to join (Keele Rock Appreciation Posse), because I love rock and metal music. I'm also considering joining Badminton or Archery too :smile:
I'm on placement year (3rd year) this year but I joined 3 societies and 3 music ensembles.

Societies:
St John Ambulance Society (now First Aid Society)
Wildlife Conservation Society + Conservation Rangers
Horse Riding Society (Joined but never went to any of their events because it was too expensive!)

Music ensembles:
Orchestra
String Orchestra
Contemporary Choir

Societies normally meet once a week or on a regular basis. Normally meetings involve some sort of related activity and the occasional social (where you go out some where like for a meal)

Examples:
First Aid Society: we meet once a week for two hours to learn/recap first aid skills and I gained my FAW qualification. We've been to comedy nights and organised a treasure hunt around town.
Wildlife Conservation Society + Conservation Rangers: haven't been for a while but they normally meet once a week. They organise talks and you can gain practical skills by helping with conservation of the local heathland sites.

At my uni you pay online. The societies I joined were £2, £10 or £15 so not too expensive. Normally it's fine to turn up without paying for a few weeks to see if you like the society.

This'll vary from uni to uni I suspect.

At my university, you now pay for memberships there and then but many societies offer 'taster sessions' which are free and hold no obligation to buy a full membership :smile:

I'm also looking forward to joining Aikido! It'll be something new and cool to do but I don't like pain, what to do?


I'm looking to join 3-5 societies. So far I have: Aikido, Badminton, Anime and a cultural one probably, not sure though
