Criticising Islam and anti-Muslim bigotry...

Scroll to see replies

People should be free to criticise religions as much as they like.

But people should be wary when constantly attributing Islam and 'backwards cultures' as the sole cause of terrorism. We've seen innocent Muslims killed in New York recently, and I doubt that it will be the last of such incidents.

Many people like you think that the shield of 'freedom to criticise' gives you the freedom to constantly hate on it.
I must admint I do struggle with this

Islam is a turd of a faith. It has abhorrent tenants that have no place in civil society and should be actively fought where ever it raises its ugly head.

Now if someone says to me I am a muslim and proud I will just dismiss them as they openly claim to be part of something I detest

I know I keep going Godwin but it's the same with the Nazis

No one said it's OK to hate National socialism but you can't hate individual Nazis as that would be bigotry

It's the same with racism no one said you can hate racism but not individual racists

so I am confused as why we would give muslims this free pass when for any other hate filled ideology we don't

comparing Muslims to Nazis is pretty absurd

How do you reconcile (i) supporting unlimited criticism of religion with (ii) not supporting (/discouraging?) people 'hating' on religion?

I personally agree with most of what you say and think it is perfectly tenable to uphold the concept of freedom of speech (through allowing and protecting, where necessary, unlimited criticisms of ideologies/ideas - e.g. religions) whilst also discouraging some elements of that freedom of speech.

I found the discussion by Sam Harris and Dave Rubin on the concept of a 'harmful idea' quite interesting. That being an idea that may be intellectually interesting, but would have a negative societal impact - such as a definitive study on any disparities between racial groups on grounds of intelligence/IQ. I think that there is a point where the vilification of Islam crosses this line and causes more problems for society. This is why some countries, such as Singapore, have laws against such elements of what we would call free speech - for the (ostensible) good of society.

No not really but have a shot at telling me why.

Just gonna use examples because I suck at explaining things.
Criticising Islam could be stating that it opresses women by not giving them a choice in what they wear (at least in many cases where the family is extremely religious and the children are afraid to go against their parents). Reasonable arguments basically, which is acceptable because everyone is entitled to an opinion. Criticism doesn't harm anyone.

Anti-Muslim bigotry would be France and the ban on the burkini. It takes away the choice of (Muslim) women to practice their religion out of their own choice. (You get women who convert to Islam on their own accord) it straight out says "you either abandon your beliefs or you don't get to enjoy swimming"

Criticising Islam in a fair and just way is fine because it's an ideology.

Criticising Muslims, on the other hand, is wrong because they're people.

Nazis are people. Can you not criticise them?

I think you need to substantiate this a bit more.

Islam is a turd of a faith.

The problem is your singling out of only one faith - Islam. (Your moral equivalence of a muslim and a Nazi is pretty disturbing also.)

It's a bit like the right wingers who call anyone who criticises Israel without criticising North Korea/Sudan/Saudi Arabia anti-Semitic because they are clearly so obsessed with Israel. You have those same people almost solely criticising Islam for being a hateful religion, without any reference to Christianity/Judaism.

Yes you could make a strong case for Islam being a greater 'issue' in today's world - but this is different to just talking about how the religion/ideology itself is so hateful.
I'm getting really tired of these threads. Seriously, why start them?! All it does is end with a bunch of people getting banned by the "moderators" for "terrorising", (which is ironic, given its a thread about Islam) some moron trying to defend Muslims. Seriously, for your own sake people, don't bother clicking on these threads because it only ends badly, this site is run by the liberal elite.

Because the vast majority of Muslims have no ill-intent. The vast majority of Nazis, however, did.

Fair response.

I do think, however, that all Nazis were bad people, and not all Muslims are bad.

It's difficult to respond... sorry :frown:

That is a completely baseless assertion.

I dare you to even begin backing that up.

Moderators have an agenda, they are picking people from a certain demographic such as - Islamophiles, socialists, liberals, LGTB, eithnic minorities and these people will not hesitate to ban you Immediately if you disagree with them or have an opinion of your own. I have heard of people who have been banned on TSR immediately, without any warning whatsoever, for merely having a heated discussion about a sensitive issue and expressing an opinion that the mods don't agree with.

Society deems a lot of things worthy of a ban. Why should certain drugs not be allowed? It is after all, as you so say, a person's own choice!

Just as drugs are banned it is a society's right to ban a garment that they deem unfit, be it because it resonates badly with others or because it stands for the oppression of women or whatever reason really.

That's funny because as soon as someone criticises Islam, they go ape **** about it. Our own government go apes **** because of PC. This is why people don't like Islam, they demand special treatment wherever they go. And you defending them all the time is just fueling that hate. This will eventually only end one way very badly and by the looks of things, very soon.

I'm defending the innocent Muslims who are suffering a wave of Islamophobia as a result of these terrorist attacks. I am not defending Islam as a religion.
