English vs Anthropology and Archaeology

So I got my results yesterday and I got BCC. I'm going to assume that I'll be predicted BBB and before results day, my plan was that I was going to English at Bristol or Nottingham. But I ended up getting a B in English rather than an A which rules out Bristol completely. Nottingham ask for ABB for their English and French course with a B in English but I'm not sure if they'll give me an offer or not because I don't think I'll be predicted an A in my other two subjects.

My backup option is Anthropology and Archaeology. The entry requirements for this at Bristol,Durham,Southampton and Nottingham are ABB-BBB (so more in my range).

I'm not really sure which subject to go for mainly because majority of the extra curricular things(like taster courses) I've done are to do with English. I want to get my UCAS and personal statement draft over and done with but I'm torn between the two subjects. I already have a personal statement draft for English but that was before results day.

Be aware that when a range of grades is quoted, the lowest are reserved for contextual offers, and unless you qualify for them (been in care, very low achieving school etc) you should expect to receive the higher offer.

Don't rush to make a decision to 'get it over with'. It's much too important a decision to hurry over and there is no advantage to an early application, particularly one which you are uncertain about. Do the research into courses first.

I do go to a very low achieving school.

Make some enquiries about how it will affect your application.

Yeah I'm planning to call Bristol and Soton to see if my school is on the updated list.

Sensible approach.

Don't go for Anthropology and Archaelogy just to get into a better uni. 3 years is a long time to be studying something if it was your 2nd choice and you really wanted to do English.

Archaeology at Durham is excellent, but anthropology has always looked boring to me.

Honestly, your option in the Netherlands looks the best to me. As it has been said above, don't force yourself to go to an uni if you don't like the subject. It's better to have a 1st in a less reputed uni than a 2:2 in a top one.

I don't recommend studying a language degree (unless you couple it with something else, eg. "German and Economics").

I didn't like the look of Durham too much but I loved Bristol to bits.

I'm honestly torn on whether to go or to stay here for uni. I have days where I don't want to leave but days I do want to leave the UK. I guess it'll depend on whether the anti immigration party in the Netherlands wins in the Dutch general election :/

Oh yeah I don't think I could survive just with languages

Well, that's good. Give it a go, then, but make sure you have a range.
Hi Mrs Sheldon Cooper

Something which might help you decide is what career options are available to you. Both English and Archaeology are very broad subjects and will give you transferable skills that can be applied to a range of jobs.

If it's archaeology that you're thinking of then it would be worth looking at the specialisms that are available at different universities and what graduates have gone on to do.

For example at Bradford we offer programmes that are traditional humanities based (BA Archaeology) and those that combine modern scientific techniques with traditional archaeology (BSc Archaeological Science). We also offer two forensic based programmes - Forensic Archaeology & Anthropology and Forensic & Medical Sciences. One of our academics explains why forensic archaeology is important and what it can lead to.

From these programmes graduates have gone into commercial archaeology, museum/conservation roles, research, academia and more. One such case study is Xanthe Mallet who is now a Forensic Criminologist in Australia.

Hope this helps and good luck!

I have a rough idea of where I'd apply for English and Anthropology

I know I really did but I can't do English at Bristol because I got a B in A2 (they wanted an A). My backup is Nottingham/Glasgow.
