willoughby hall

just been placed in this catered hall accommodation, anyone know what it is like?
It's pretty much standard uni accommodation, I didn't stay there myself but I had friends there. It's probably the furthest away from most buildings on uni park campus being right next to west entrance at Broadgate park. You will have a common room to socialise and there is a big dining hall where you have your meals. Pretty sure all the rooms are standard non-ensuite and you will share around 3 toilets and showers with a corridor of people. My friends didn't seem to have a problem with this and the rooms aren't the prettiest really but will have everything you need in them.

I'm guessing you can't change the offer of accommodation once you have it? I couldn't find anywhere to choose the hall either. I asked for a single study 'plus' room but instead got a standard one at Willoughby, how far is it from the science buildings? Perhaps it's because I applied through clearing and all the nice ones are now full?

I also got a single study room at Willoughby. It's pretty far from my department. Which course are you doing?

Wonder if I can change hall before term start or after the 1st term?

Yeah you cannot choose which catered hall you want, you choose the room type you want and then they will allocate accordingly. Going through clearing means you are probably less likely to get your first choice, sorry about that but it's really not that bad! Willoughby is probably the furthest away from the sconce buildings, around a 15-20 minute walk (yeah uni park is massive) but I lived in Broadgate which is across the road so technically even further away and I could set off for a 9am at 8:35 and arrive on time. I do engineering and the science blocks are right next to the engineering building maybe even slightly closer.

I would've thought that most students applying want to save money and would go for self catered if not a single catered room, so I assumed there would be some 'plus' rooms left, might call them on Tuesday, no harm in trying I guess. I think the quality of the hall will play a big part in how happy or not I will be there, considering I did not get into my first choice.

You can always try but honestly, not having a plus room is hardly going to dampen your uni experience! Believe me! Everyone I knew had a great time at uni regardless of how 'nice' their halls were! And Notts is a great uni despite it not being your first choice. Try to be positive about it as some people struggle to get uni accommodation at all!

I hope so! I'm currently busy researching the free 'hopper' bus service which might help with transport around campus since I don't really want to ride a bike.

Is there any kind of facebook group for this hall or freshers in general?

Yeah, there's groups for each hall, go on uonwelcome.com and you should be able to find it, there's also various groups on Facebook for freshers including course groups!

Thanks, I've joined the groups but there doesn't seem to be much activity? Is there a group chat I should be on because in the main university group some people mention group chats. Sorry if it's a silly question, it's because I'm so late to the whole thing!

To be honest I'm not too sure as I haven't been in the groups for this year. Maybe you could ask someone on the groups if there is a chat you can be added to which is for your hall/course? I think I was on one for my course before I started!
