Portaloo in room instead of sharing bathroom at university?

Scroll to see replies

You're going to have to empty it out - probably down the communal toilet... so at the best your flatmates are going to think it's your duty to play a part cleaning the communal toilet anyway.
probably they won't be delighted about you lugging a bucket of your poop and wee through the communal area to get to the toilet either.
... so think of another way of coping imo - e.g. discreetly using gloves and antiseptic wipes for sterilising any surfaces you're worried about touching.

Maybe just buy some antibacterial wipes and keep them on you or in the bathroom instead. A portaloo is going a bit far, but it doesn't hurt to antibac the hell out of everything lmao.

Could always put the portaloo in your wardrobe if you know what days are inspection days and just be like "hey I like camping".
Could you really be bothered?

terminate the licence - you are NOT a tenant in University accomodation ...

Because bringing a portable thing for hygenic reasons into your room is against their rules. Lmfao do you really think they'll fail to understand this and then demand As and A*s from students?
Go get your apparent OCD diagnosed then get an ensuite room through the disability office (for which I would be completely supportive of, btw), or grow the f*** up. What are you going to do once you leave uni or have to share a house in second year? This is the most ridiculous idea I've heard on TSR for a long time.

Agreed.

You knew about this problem before you applied so should have only applies to ensuites and found a privately rented place when you did not get one.

I'm personally renting 1bed flat and it costs same as halls with bills included.
These posts are so ridiculous - we get it, you're happy to share a bathroom, good for you!! Not everyone is or wants to.

I think it sounds a good idea. It's ok sharing a toilet if people you share with are clean but I totally get what you mean about pee on the seat etc, when I see this in public toilets it turns my stomach. You don't know how clean the other people you share with are going to be.

I probably wouldn't poo in it though because it might smell if you're leaving it in your room for a while (I dunno how often you would empty something like that) I wish I'd thought of this at uni.

I hate sharing bathrooms, kitchens too but not as badly but I planned accordingly instead of getting any room in halls and then complaining about the result.

So you're back to using the bathroom then, thereby defeating the whole purpose of trying to avoid it.

a bucket and chuck it is not ' hygenic' when used indoors ...
I'd rather share a loo than poo in a portaloo kept in my room :erm:
If your OCD has been formally diagnosed, get in touch with the disability service at your uni.

If you haven't, are you on Facebook? If so join the fresher a groups and accommodation groups. There's a good chance that someone has been allocated ensure but will be happy to swap with you due to cost.

If you're not on Facebook, contact accommodation department and ask them if someone allocated en suite asks for what you've got, could you swap.

Bringing a portaloo wouldn't be a bad idea if you wanna be the creepy guy with a portaloo.

Just get en suite, dude, shared bathrooms are ****. Imagine what's it gonna be like when everyone has to go in the morning before classes. I shared it with 3 other people and it sucked, imagine if 8 ppl shared it. Change accom. to en suite.

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww surely it's more gross to be keeping all your excrement in a container in your room, rather than flushing it away in a communal toilet!!!!!
OK - there are a lot of posts here telling you to man up and just get on with it. When you actually have OCD or a genuine phobia of something, it isn't that easy.

I would suggest that you visit a GP, who might be able to refer you for CBT or another type of therapy that will allow you to deal with your anxieties. There's no shame in it whatsoever, but it should not dictate your life in this way. It won't always be possible to drag a portaloo wherever you go, and you will most likely have to use public toilets or communal bathrooms at some point.

From a purely practical perspective, ask around to see if there are any en suite rooms available, even as a swap. If not, have a little more faith in people. People are sometimes pretty disgusting with kitchens, but in my experience, they're really not too bad with bathrooms.

Don't get a portaloo. It will make socialising in your room pretty awkward, it is probably against the terms of your lease, and - the smell.

It's more hygenic to piss and **** in your room and haul it around to empty it, than to use a shared toilet where you just have to flush? That's disgusting, all you need is some antibacterial wipes for the toilet. You'll probably get splattered trying to empty it anyway.

If you think you have OCD you should really go and get diagnosed now so you can get an ensuite because theres no way a portaloo in your bedroom is more hygenic than using a bathroom.
