i am thinking to become a haematologist
so how long would it approximately take to be a band 9?

Hi,
My guess is that you are looking at years of education aswell as years of climbing the ranks in your medical profession. If I had to say - probably 9 years or more from your graduate position because of the sheer time and work it takes to become a consultant or whatever in that field

Yes to an extent. In any NHS health professional job you should not expect an immediate band 9 salary from early on (unless you have some extremely impressive qualifications/experience).

On the other hand, reaching band 9 is not at all impossible :smile:

First of all let me say, if money is your motivation, this isn't the career for you.

A Band 7 is a Senior Biomedical Scientist and beyond and the laboratory bench work becomes significantly decreased.
A Band 8 is a Chief Biomedical Scientist who will run whole disciplines such as microbiology and haematology. These will do next to no laboratory work, it's sat at a computer, office work.
A Band 9 will be the 'Clinical Director' who will run the whole of the pathology area within a hospital. These will do no laboratory work, it's hospital management.

Band 9 is very nearly impossible. If you're going into this career aiming for that then forget about it because it more than likely will not happen.You have to be happy with less otherwise you will spend the majority of your career unhappy, and if it comes, it comes.

The lack of knowledge about Biomedical Scientist careers on this forum astounds me. The post above me states that it is possible to get a Band 9 job early on. No, no it is not.

Can I also add, when you state 'Is that for all Biomedical Scientists', BMS's ONLY work in the NHS. Any scientist working outside the NHS is not a Biomedical Scientist. It is a protected title used to refer to those working as HCPC registered scientists within the NHS.

With a pure biomedical science degree you're going in at band 2 without registration. Clearly money is your motivator and as such I suggest neither are for you.

Money isn't my motivation i want a job that i look forward to and i was just curious about the money n yeah i know it takes like 20 years to be band 8 or sumet so don't jump to conclusions

The highest on the BMS pathway is Band 8b. An 8a (one under 8b) runs individual specialisms.

If you want to get insulting then I won't waste my time. Nobody here will give you this information because most people here have no laboratory experience. I read this post out in the staff room of a NHS laboratory and it was met with laughter. Band 8B is the highest you can go on the BMS ladder. Of course, you can go into management but then why bother with the BMS ladder? That's like training to be a BMS, getting to Band 8B and then going off and somehow, despite the complete lack of qualifications and experience in it, going to be a Band 9 psychologist. It doesn't happen.

You quite possibly dislike been told you won't get to Band 9. When I say you cannot get to Band 9, I mean it. The BMS profession ends before that. It isn't impossible to get to Band 8B, but it's extremely unlikely since there will be one per hospital with an insane amount of interest. Even 8A's, 1-2 per specialism usually and you're competing with everyone trained in that specialism. 7 is achievable definitely with 4-6 in each specialism dependent on laboratory size.

If you want to be a BMS, you have to be happy as a Band 6 as it's very, very possible that you'll never achieve higher.

I thought you had to apply for up to 4 meds and 1 other extra? How can you do one med??

U apply for medicine in October if u get 4 offers then u cant apply again and if u get one offer u can apply for a different course in December hence i got 4 offers for biomed
