What results do UK students use to apply to universities?

As far as i know the applications for universities close somewhere in January/February, and A-level results will only be released in August. So how are the A-level results applicable during application period? I'm rather confused by how the whole thing works.

Or do they use A-level predictions to apply for university?

You use A-Level (or Scottish exams) predictions to apply and then if your offer is conditional you must meet the grades they ask to get in.
For example, my predictions were AAB and that was my offer for uni, so I had to achieve AAB to gain my place.
