Call Sussex uni accom/housing on Monday morning and see if they have had anyone not turn up or back out.

For instance, my daughters block is one of 6, as of yesterday its only her and another girl so far.

Don't panic, there will be options of house shares etc so guessing you've jumped on FB to see if people wanted to arrange a share?
I saw in the http://www.sussexstudentlettings.com (student union managed leggings) a two bedroom place for £1000pm, so not beyond the scope for a student loan.

As above, there will be spaces from people who either dont turn up or who leave in the first few weeks. Phone the Accom Office so that they know you want to be considered for any room that becomes available, book yourself into a cheap B&B (there are hundreds in Brighton) and keep in contact with the Accom Office.

Also, once you start your course you may find someone with a space in a house/flat share - ask, around, and keep an eye on student notice boards. There is also Student Spare Room - http://student.spareroom.co.uk/ - which advertises spare rooms in house/flat shares etc.
