Funnily enough I was just studying question 2 in my advanced physics class at school. We were studying torques and how they can be applied to forces in equilibrium. An example would be a piece of board hanging on a fulcrum(a seesaw basically)with evenly distributed masses lying on each end of the fulcrum. The forces can only be in equilibrium when their is an even distribution of torque on each end of the fulcrum and it takes into consideration not only the downwards forces caused by the masses(weight) but also the distance(r) from the central axis which would be the fulcrum. Very interesting stuff really. Sorry don't know an answer for question 2.
