Graduates applying for undergraduate medicine (5 year)

Hello,

This is a thread for students with an undergraduate degree or masters who are looking to apply to an undergraduate medicine course. I haven't found a thread like this on TSR yet and I thought it would be nice for us to all discuss which university we are applying to, our stats and ask each other for advice.

As the 5 year course is almost all self funded it would be nice to plan how we are going to finance it, as it is a big issue for most applicants.

* Good luck with your applications, feel free to post your stats!

How are you planning to finance it? Did you consider the accelerated course?

I have considered the four year courses, however they have a really high ukcat cut off and have higher competition. I think the maximise my chances it would be best to apply to a mixture of undergrad and post grad. What are your thoughts?

I'm planning on financing it by working in a gap year and working throughout the degree.*
Applying for Newcastle 5 year. Funding by selling my car :frown:
I'm not applying for undergraduate medicine as a graduate but I'm wondering how on earth people are going to fund it all? You will need £9000 a year plus living costs

You can take out a maintenance loan of £8200 and use that to pay the fees. The you need to cover rent and living costs. My parents are helping with the rent and I have some savings for living costs wmbut will work during the uni holidays too

I have done this anyway - taken out a maintenance loan of £8200 to pay the fees
I've just finished a five-year Medicine course as a graduate. I was lucky to have snuck in just before the fees went up, so it was a lot more manageable, but if anyone has any questions about studying undergrad Medicine as a graduate, I'm happy to try to answer them.

you must have a seriously pricey car! oh well, I'm sure you will be able to fund another car once you're established in whichever field you want to specialise in

I'm primarily going to apply to universities that I can commute to, so will save on rent etc. Also will apply for a maintenance loan, which will be around 3k a year, so will have to only save 6k/year. Thats the rough plan at the moment, will have to fine tune it obviously.

8200?!?! I have never heard of a maintenance loan that high. The most I received for my undergraduate (not in london) was about 3.2k... :/

Yeah I guess you could do that, pay 8200 with maintenance loan and then pay the remaining 800 a year + rent and living costs with part time job or whatever. Do you get that much maintenance loan though? How would you balance your job with studying though?

Yes I think it's a new thing due to the fees increase so it makes things a bit more manageable.

As for working during the degree - if I do one shift I will be able to make enough money to cover my food for the month so it's not too bad.

Dependant on assessed household income, the amount of maintenance loan will be:

Living at home - Up to £6,904
Living away from home, outside London - Up to £8,200

If you're over 25, you're classed as an independent mature student. The living at home would not apply (even if you were living at home with your parents) and you would be eligible for the 'Up to £8,200' loan. Your assessed income would not include your parents. Yours and your partners income only.

Hope this helps

Hi, I just graduated in Pharmacy with a 1st from King's and am now conducting my Pre-reg at a flagship boots store. I have AAB in Bio, Maths, chem at A level. I am considering applying to the undergraduate course as I am fearful of the UKCAT. Have no idea how I'll perform. Does anyone know if you need AAA for A level's to apply to the undergraduate courses? I can fund the course hopefully due to savings. Just have no clue where to apply assuming my UKCAT is below average.

I'm looking to apply for the 5 year course too. In terms of funding I'm going to enquire about "future finance". From what I saw on their website they're able to fund up to £40,000. However, they expect you to start making payments (capped at £75 per month) as soon as you start your course. And once you finish the course I think the cap is removed after 3 months and you begin to pay back larger amounts. I'm currently working as a phlebotomist and saving so that I can pay back during the course. And I'm HOPING if I was to be accepted that I'm able to find a post within 3 months after graduating so paying back wouldn't be a problem. The other drawback is the interest rate. I think it's a bit high too. I'm going to speak to a few banks to see if they offer professional development loans too. So far those are my only options. I'm also hoping to work part time during the course to help with extra expenditure.
Hi! I'm applying for undergrad medicine too.
Did my UKCAT yesterday:
VR - 590
QR - 680
AR - 610
SJT - Band 2
Average of 627.

Planning on making use of a postgrad loan and working.

Can anyone give me some advice as to where to apply?
My choices so far are Aberdeen, Dundee, Glasgow and Newcastle. Is this feasible? Wheres everyone else applying?
Thanks in advance.
