Admissions statisitic?

Interesting article in the press yesterday that middle-class families are being priced out of private education. Does that explain why the "state" percentage is creeping up?

We've found that the number of applications from independents has flat-lined whereas the number of UK applications from other schools has grown. There is no single cause but contributory factors are the efforts the colleges have made to conduct regional schools outreach and a rise in KS5 attainment in particular areas, notably Greater London schools. Admissions tests, contextual information, interview training, and the ease with which advice/guidance can be accessed electronically (including TSR!) are also worth mentioning.

So in short, UK applications have risen driven primarily by state schools, the overall success rate has therefore fallen slightly (because the number of places available has stayed the same), but the odds a state school candidate will be successful has not fallen relative to independents and has probably improved a bit.
