Joint honours

I was considering studying a joint honors in French and Geography but I've read some negative things about doing a joint honors, is a single better?

It completely depends what you want out of the degree. Some jobs will require a single honours degree because of the topics covered, but others just ask for any degree. Usually when people are against joint honours it's with subjects like law or accounting - you need to have studied certain things to get accreditation for the specific career path as a lawyer or an accountant (amongst other things). With French and geography there's unlikely to be any such rules, but you need to check which modules will be covered and which won't - you need to have studied things like translation to do specific jobs as a translator, for example.
